Today we’d like to introduce you to Trish Kennedy.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hey, my name is Trish Kennedy and I am a creative designer living in Houston, Texas. I really don’t know how to categorize all that I do into one thing because I do a little bit of everything and that is kind of like my brand aesthetic.
I originally started out DJing in 2016 in Nigeria on vacation and then I moved back to Houston and continued to do it here while I was still in University.
I then ventured into fashion, which has always been my true passion and calling, since I was younger I always wanted to be a fashion designer.
So, I started modeling and designing clothes alongside DJing. This went on for a few more years and then I decided to turn my focus to fashion completely.
Now, I have a clothing brand and am working on another one, as well as styling conceptual photoshoots and music videos, I am also still a model for fun from time to time and creative direct photoshoots and video shoots.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, navigating the creative scene in itself is not always the easiest because you have to find like-minded creatives who are focused on the vision and just creating something amazing.
Many people focus more on getting paid or the hype of things, as opposed to just wanting to genuinely collaborate with other creatives who have similar visions and goals and make something that is original and important to us all.
It took me a while to find a group of creatives whose intentions were aligned with mine but once I did it felt so amazing and it made executing an idea so much easier because I now know who to call for whatever I need.
These creatives are incredible individuals who are exceptional at what they do and very well experienced so we learn from each other as we collaborate and that means so much to me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an all-around creative person, I have many skills and wear different hats depending on the day.
I am mostly known for being a DJ, designer, model, and stylish, these are the things I am most proud of, passionate about, and really enjoy doing. I started off DJing but I always knew I wanted to make clothes because it had always been a huge part of my life and I’ve always been admired for my fashion sense and personal style.
This made me decide to make fashion my focal point and explore that option fully. Once I started doing that I would photograph models in my designs and eventually, I decided to start photographing myself in my own designs since people already seemed to gravitate toward my outfits and style. This eventually lead to photographers reaching out to me and asking to shoot me for their concepts and that’s how I began my modeling journey.
Modeling is still something I enjoy doing a lot because I get to dress up and explore out-of-the-box looks that I may not typically go for on a regular day. I think what makes me stand out is that I have so many gifts that are valuable to the creative realm and people in and out of this realm can recognize and respect that.
For instance, I can be the model for a creative concept that I have come up with and will be directing, I can also style myself in my own clothing brand or other pieces that suit the vision, additionally, I can do my own hair and makeup as well; so I am really all I need, and a photographer, in order to accomplish a shoot and I think that is my superpower and biggest asset.
This is something that people recognize after working with me and they usually value me on their team because I can do and be so many different useful things on set, and so I would say that definitely sets me apart from other creatives who just do one thing.
What’s next?
I plan on expanding my current brand Asylum and starting a new clothing line which will be a high fashion line that appeals to both men and women.
I also intend to continue styling and creative directing photoshoots and videos as well as modeling and continuing to design new pieces and accessories. I also plan on expanding my skill sets in any way I can creatively and just learning new things and being a student of life.
I am looking forward to my journey ahead and just seeing where my talent and drive take me next, I’m very excited to see the places I’ll be in and the milestones I will reach.
