Rising Stars: Meet Shelly Lares

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelly Lares.

Shelly Lares

Hi, Shelly; we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started in the Tejano music industry at 10 when I recorded my first 45 records. I performed with a local Tejano Orquesta, “Hot Tamales,” from age 10 to 14 and recorded 5 45 records. I played locally and in the Austin, Houston, Dallas, and Waco area every weekend. At 14, I told my parents I wanted to start my band and create sound. I performed at different events, got my first record contract at 17, and went on the road as a full-time musician with my parents managing my career. Manny Guerra signed me to a 7-year contract, and I began writing and producing my music and style. I quickly had a lot of success on the road and the radio, traveling throughout the United States and parts of México. Throughout my 40 years, I was also signed to Sony Discos and independent label Tejas Records. In 2012, I started my record label. SHELLSHOCK RECORDS 3. I’ve been recognized with many awards, including 3 Grammy nominations. After 40 years in the industry, I retired from the road to begin doing music therapy for hospice patients and opened my recording studio, SHELLSHOCK RECORDING STUDIO. I signed my first artist, EL GALLO DEZ, to my label, SHELLSHOCK RECORDS 3, and am the first artist in residence at UTSA. I continue to achieve all the goals, and God continues leading the way.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Being one of only 7 women in the Tejano music industry in 1982, we were overlooked and underrated. We had to work extra hard to get airplay and to headline shows. Constantly put up against each other even though we were different artists with many things to bring to the table.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
– Music Producer and Record Label Owner
– Songwriter and Mentor
– Artist in residence at UTSA
– Music therapy for hospice patients

I am most proud of retiring after 40 years in the music industry as an artist still in my prime to challenge myself more and grow.
What sets me apart is I’ve created my lane in this industry. I strive to be the best version of myself, not a follower but a leader.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
– Perseverance Resilience
– Consistency
– Determination
– Passion
– Integrity
– Uniqueness
