Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Bustamante.
Hi Scott , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Where do I begin? So it all started when a made a last minute decision to go to beauty school after i graduated high school. I grew in a small town called Poth then relocated to Seguin where I attended Navarro High school. Once obtaining my license after beauty school I worked at a salon in Seguin then moved to San Antonio so on and so forth. My journey wasn’t easy at the beginning of my career I had a lot of ups and a lot of downs. Especially being the first in my family to be a hairstylist and as well as a business owner. If I’m being honest I feel like I had more downs than ups but that never stopped me, my mom used to always tell me to never give up and don’t listen to what others had to say which wasn’t the easiest for me. As I made my way through my career things I feel like I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. I had worked in salons of all kinds high end where very intense training was required to take clients even though I had some years under my belt, to just your regular every day salon where it was more relaxed and we could build relationships with clients and what not. I had also jumped to suites and back to your regular booth rent salon. It wasn’t until I made the decision to come work back in seguin where I got the opportunity of a life time. You know I’ve always been told that when one door closes another opens, I felt that wasn’t the case for me but you know we don’t always recognize when another opens, especially when it’s not a huge opportunity but I later realized every opportunity big or small is a door opening. Well I had recieved a message one day asking if I’d be interested in doing hair and makeup at New York Fashion week. I couldn’t believe it!! I literally said to myself why me? Of course I had said yes when the opportunity presented it self! I had the time of my life I went from working in a small country town to being in New York City for an entire week creating connections with some of the best hairdresser in the game. I wish the opportunity came soon but I always say “good things come to those who wait!” Which brings me to present day still behind the chair creating beautiful hair and always wondering and manifesting my next move in my career.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Umm…no! lol! 2025, I have to say, was probably one of the hardest times in my career. I feel like changes in a work space can put a huge burden on someone who is trying to thrive in this industry. Mind you, I had switched salons twice in about six months, which I’m not proud of, but I own up to it. Looking back, I also realized how important it is to find an environment that aligns with your values. I do my best work in a positive, supportive atmosphere where everyone is focused on uplifting one another. I’ve never been someone who enjoys unnecessary negativity or distractions—I prefer to keep my head down, stay focused on my clients, and let my work speak for itself.
I feel like you have to literally be “on” at work, and sometimes I would come in and just pull back from everyone to have some quiet time. Some people can misinterpret that because it makes you seem a certain way, when in reality it’s simply how I recharge. We have to take time for ourselves because we never truly know what another stylist is going through or carrying from the conversations they have with clients every day.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well…I’m a hairstylist and makeup artist with a passion for creating luxury, personalized experiences. I’m also a bridal makeup artist, and behind the chair I specialize in blonding, hair extensions, and corrective color. My clients always tell me I give the best shampoos too, so I’ll happily take that compliment! I’d have to say I’m best known for my blondes. Most of my referrals are blonde clients. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come. I look back at some of my work from the beginning of my career that I thought was incredible at the time, and now I can clearly see how much I’ve grown. That’s one of the things I love most about this industry—we’re always learning, evolving, and finding new ways to perfect our craft. After 17 years behind the chair, I’m still just as passionate about education and growth as I was on day one. I never want to become comfortable because I believe there’s always something new to learn, whether it’s refining my techniques, improving the client experience, or challenging myself creatively. I’ve never wanted to fit into a mold. We work in one of the most artistic industries there is, so why would I want to be like every other hairstylist? I believe every artist brings something unique to the table, and I’ve always wanted my work and my client experience to reflect who I am rather than following what everyone else is doing. For me, it’s about so much more than great hair. I want every client who sits in my chair to feel welcomed, comfortable, heard, and cared for from the moment they walk in. Creating beautiful hair is only part of what I do—the experience is just as important. Hair may bring people into my chair, but genuine relationships are what keep them coming back. Many of my clients have become like family over the years, and that’s something I’ll never take for granted.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Hmm…honestly, I don’t know, and I think that’s one of the things I love most about this industry. It’s constantly evolving, and there’s always something new around the corner. Trends move so quickly that it’s almost impossible to predict what will be popular five or ten years from now, and I think that’s what keeps our creativity alive. More than anything, I hope we continue to see our industry gain the recognition it deserves. People often think hairstylists just “play with hair” all day, but what we really do goes far beyond that. We’re artists, educators, problem-solvers, therapists, business owners, and confidence builders all wrapped into one. I also hope we continue to see more individuality. Instead of everyone chasing the same trends, I’d love to see more stylists embracing their own artistic style and creating work that reflects who they are. At the end of the day, great hair will never go out of style, but making people feel confident and beautiful will always be timeless. That’s what I hope never changes.
