Rising Stars: Meet Rachel McSweeney of San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel McSweeney.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been creative and entrepreneurial. I’ve been a photographer for over 12 years, which eventually led me into content creation, marketing, and social media.

But The Social Maverick really comes from something much more personal. Growing up, my extended family was in the public eye, and our last name was well known throughout our area and different media communities. I learned pretty young how easy it was to become something other people told you to be, how to look, act, and show up.

I eventually found my way into social media, working in content creation, client success, and leadership. The more businesses I worked with, the more I realized the same thing kept happening—we’re constantly being told what we need to do, what we need to post, and who we need to be to succeed.

That’s ultimately why I made the jump and started The Social Maverick. I wanted to do things differently. I believe every business already has something worth connecting with. You don’t need to become what social media tells you to be. Sometimes you just need someone to help bring out the Maverick that was already there.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not, but I don’t think I would want it to have been. I knew pretty early that my life was going to be entrepreneurial. I’ve never spent much time working for other people. I’ve always been building something of my own and figuring it out as I went.

For part of that journey, I was a single mom building businesses while raising my girls and making sure everything kept moving. There wasn’t always room to wait for the perfect opportunity or the “right time.” I had to learn how to make things happen with what I had.

My life looks very different today. I’m married, we’re raising three girls, and I’m still building just in a different season. I’ve had businesses work, ideas fail, unexpected pivots, and plenty of moments where the plan completely changed.

The road hasn’t been smooth, but every version of my life has taught me something about adapting, trusting myself, and continuing to build even when the path there looks nothing like I expected.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The Social Maverick is a social media management and content creation company built for small, local businesses. Wehandle everything from strategy and content creation to posting and analytics, but what We really specialize in is finding the story and personality behind a business and bringing that to life online.

I’m known for creating content that feels real. I love getting the owners, employees, and personalities behind a business involved because that’s usually where the connection happens. Not everything needs to be perfectly polished, and you definitely don’t have to follow every trend to have successful social media.

What sets The Social Maverick apart is that I’m not trying to make businesses fit social media. I’m making social media fit their business. I get to know my clients, their customers, their personality, and even their quirks, and build from there.

What I’m most proud of is watching business owners start to see what I saw in them from the beginning. When they stop worrying so much about what they’re “supposed” to post and start having fun showing people who they really are that’s the best part.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The easiest way to work with me is to reach out to The Social Maverick on social media. I work with small businesses through social media management, content creation, and strategy, but I’m also always open to collaborations, local events, and creative ideas that bring businesses and people together.

Supporting me is even simpler support the businesses I work with. Follow them, share their posts, walk through their doors, and tell your friends about them. Small businesses grow through real people talking about them, and that kind of connection is what The Social Maverick is all about.
