Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Carter.
Hi Paul, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Addicted to motorcycles and racing practically from birth, my father started me wrenching at the age of 5 and I’ve been doing it ever since. A daily rider from the age of 5, street riding since age 16, Track day Instructing and new rider coach since 2006. So 50 years of real-world experience riding and wrenching, and I’ve expanded to include race prep, upgrades, insurance covered damage claims, transport, as well as one-on-one instruction for new and Advanced riders and racers. I Love what I do and it shows.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It took 30 years to convince myself to turn a passion into a career. I honestly didnt think I could feed my family just working on motorcycles. The economic downturn in 2007 forced me to change my direction, so at my wife’s behest I gave Motorcycle repair a full-time shot. Its been growing ever since.
After doing the business for 16 years however, I was stuck where I couldnt grow without help but I couldnt afford the help. I hired a management company called DRIVE to wake me up to take the gamble that needed to be made. 2 years later I’m now an Operator instead of a mechanic and the business almost runs itself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Riding motorcycles are assumed by most people to be high risk. While they dont have the same safety features as other vehicles, very skilled riders can mitigate the risk to a very small fraction of what it would be without those skills. So I saw very early on the need to offer one-on-one instruction to RAPIDLY increase a riders skill set – and help them thus enjoy the sport for a lifetime – rather than just becoming another cautionary tale. So when folks come to the shop for repairs or performance improvements – they learn very quickly that I’m just as invested in them and their safety as I am their bike.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Under promise and over-deliver. I want customers to leave knowing that we care about them even more than they do!
