Hi Mercedes, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first started my business journey in 2013 while working in the corporate world at AT&T. A friend introduced me to selling on Amazon, so I opened my own account and began selling all kinds of items. That’s when I got my first real taste of entrepreneurship.
In 2014, I decided to start a mommy-and-me boutique focused on matching outfits for moms and their little ones — and that’s where the name Fox & Tots was born. Over the years, we’ve continued to sell clothing, always staying true to those boutique roots.
In 2018, AT&T laid off the majority of our department, and it became a “sink or swim” moment. With the full support of my husband, I decided to go all in and work my boutique full time.
Like many small businesses, we faced some wild challenges — from COVID to changing trends — and had to pivot several times. At one point, custom fabric was our biggest seller. After the pandemic, that market slowed down, and a friend came to me with the idea of adding slime. We ran with it — and it took off!
Since then, we’ve gone above and beyond to provide the best slime parties in South Texas. I’ve continued to blend creativity with my boutique background, still carrying boutique items while expanding into wholesale tees for small businesses and uniforms for private schools.
Today, I describe our store as a custom boutique — offering everything from personalized tees and hats to unforgettable slime experiences.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggled on having to pivot to other trends to make ends meet.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Definitely finding someone in your field. Two people I met in my field have become my best friends and mentors.
