Rising Stars: Meet Melanie Machin of San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Machin.

Hi Melanie , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since I could remember, I have always been into color, patterns and fashion! I grew up as a military kid overseas and it was fun to capture different styles everywhere I went. Moving to the states was a culture shock to me and I felt as if I never really fit in. I’m the type to get in my car and drive. One day I ran into a mural that had the same pattern as a top I had in my closet and went back to that mural to take a picture. Then it clicked! “Let me start a niche to discover places but at the same time meet new faces that like fashion too” and so I did just that! I began incorporating my fashion , love for color and patterns to murals everywhere I visited. Not only for me to expand my existence to the San Antonio plus size community but to also give local artists their spotlight and recognition for their mural artwork as well .

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been nothing but a smooth road for me so far, yes, some people will view your stories, posts and not engage, even when you do it for them, they will have envy for not being able to dress or look like you, but I ignore it and do my own thing, because there are more than a million other humans on this floating rock that will eventually catch a few eyes and will like what I do.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As I stated earlier, I have learned to adapt through my culture shock by maintaining my passion is what I love most, fashion and hopefully encouraging other people with body types like myself that they do not need to be “skinny” to dress nice. It is all with coordinating and knowing color tones. I have met a great fashion community here by doing a few pop up markets here and there and go by the name of “Melanie’s Mall”. So for anyone reading this, do not hesitate to say hello, shop a few of my pieces and ask for a tip or two on outfits.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory would definitely being able to drive to Paris on my long four day weekends from school and just being so close to beautiful locations. I love to travel. My parents are from Puerto Rico , so I tend to visit every summer.
