Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariel Feliz Reyes.
Hi Mariel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started this business almost a year ago. I wanted people to reconnect in a way that was genuine and romantic. Picnics were rarely discussed, and not at all looked at how I plan mine.
It was something I found unique, elegant, and fun at the same time. Today, I have booked over fifty events since August. This concept started for couples with one singular booking form, and a few options, and grew into something so much more than I expected.
Now, I have a website, I offer three packages for Couples Picnics, accommodate large group Party Picnics, planning weddings, TableScapes, and balloon installations. Crazy!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh goodness, so not smooth! I have made so many mistakes and cried so many tears, but looking back, this small business of mine has taught me so much and helped me grow in more ways than I could have ever imagined.
I consider myself a perfectionist, and one of the hardest things I had to do for myself was learn to give myself grace. Sometimes certain things were entirely out of my control, and thank goodness for being blessed with the best clients.
They were completely understanding and still very supportive, both personally and publicly. Regardless, I wouldn’t trade my struggles for the world.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Aside from Pop a Picnic, I’m a Respite Provider for children with intellectual and physical disabilities, an active student, and a fur mom to three pups! I love my full-time job; it’s a self-employed, so it’s taught me a lot of discipline and patience, especially with children.
Sometimes my children are teaching me more than I thought I knew, and other times, they’re making me laugh and smile through the simplest acts. The kids I care for have clarified what skills of mine shine the brightest and why the health system needs people who genuinely care.
My side business, Pop a Picnic is so much fun. I’m the happiest when I’m planning a picnic or setting up. I love it so much, which is why I work so much. I want us to continue to keep growing and expanding.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’m fortunate to have the support from my family and loved ones.
My boyfriend is at every picnic as my assistant if I need him, my grandmother is so creative, and I know I get a lot from her side. My boyfriend’s sister doesn’t hesitate to lend me her car if I need it since mine can be a little cramped at times, and both my boyfriend’s mom and my parents make sure they’re marketing my name and what I do.
My support team is my good luck in life and business.
