Rising Stars: Meet Manuel Adame of New Braunfels

Today we’d like to introduce you to Manuel Adame

Hi Manuel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We stumbled on the idea of a Beer Burro business when we first started. Initially we wanted to start a Mobile Bar Business but the cost and permitting was more than we expected. The idea a tequila donkey business originated from a friend at work who challenged me to purchase some donkeys on Craigslist and train them to be beer burros. Word of caution, don’t buy donkeys from Craigslist…you will be scammed. We’ve never had a ranch or even owned land to keep stubborn animals such as donkeys around. And boy can they be stubborn at times. We had to train the burros to do everything from A to Z. Some of the most time-consuming training tasks have been carrying bottled beer in baskets, walking up and down crowded gatherings, riding down elevators and even standing on cow-hides have been the most difficult. We’ve had a lot of fun with this project but it has certainly demanded a lot time upfront.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been far from a smooth road. Donkeys in general are super skittish animals and we had to desensitize them to anything and everything you possibly could. I believe taking them to Hardrock Cafe during the Fiesta events in downtown San Antonio really helped from that perspective.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Chemical Engineer by trade and a 1997 graduate of Texas Tech University. I have worked in the Oil & Gas Industry for 27 years and continue to do so here in San Antonio where I’m currently employed by Marathon Petroleum. I believe my perseverance and attention to detail really sets me apart from most. I’m a thrill-seeker and always looking for new adventures. You will never have a dull moment hanging around me.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
The best way to find mentors is networking with the people you work with. Always take new challenges, seek new opportunities and certainly never stay in your comfort zone for too long.
