Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandy Fryar
Hi Mandy , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
So my early years were pretty rough and to cope I started painting and acting, which lead in older years to an interest in makeup. I started doing makeup and hair for all the plays I was in and then slowly became part of production crew, I was also know for glamming up my step siblings for their college outings and friends for events, I fell in love with making people feel their best. after high school I knew cosmetology and makeup were the route I’d go so i graduated cosmetology in 2011 and then 3 years later moved away from my tiny town of 3,000 people to Los Angeles all alone to attend Elegance International a beauty-SFX makeup school. I fell in love with editorial makeup and weddings after almost 2 years there I knew I wanted to move back to Texas and when I arrived back I started off with a bang and developed my online following of Theglamourgypsy, after a few years of hard hustling and multiple jobs I was luckily enough to end up in the hill country and have been here the last 5 years. I work at G. Hollis salon in Canyon Lake and also outside of that still specialize in on location event hair and makeup, in the next year I also hope to expand back into photography and editorial makeup. I’m a constant work in progress and always striving for more so who knows where the next five years will take me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been smooth at all, the early years of my career I was scraping by without the help of my dad and stepmom I’d probably been a starving artist at certain points if I’m honest, but I know how to work hard and so I did at one point I worked 4 jobs just to afford to be a traveling makeup artist and at another point I almost threw in the towel and tried to become a bank teller and when I didn’t land the job I was so upset but when I told my dad about it all he said was “Mandy you’re an artist you’d hate a “regular” job like that, just keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll be alright.” And so I did I worked long hours and usually 7 days a week to save to move this way and when I did I was blessed enough that I’ve had enough work the last 5 years to keep me doing souley what I love which is hair and makeup.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Hairstylist/Makeup artist. I specialize in all forms of hair color, Brazilian blowouts, cuts, and event hair. As well as photography makeup, and event makeup, I also breakout the painting skills for Halloween makeup during the season.
I’m most proud of the feedback I receive from clients many say I’m someone who makes them feel totally themselves (which is what I strive to do) i really believe beauty isn’t just outward so I do my best to encompass beauty on the inside as well.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
It’s not very surprising but I loved going to my Munders (what I called my grandma) and I’d sneak into her bathroom as a little girl and play in her makeup and then take myself to her spare room where she kept all her jewelry and I’d dress myself up to the nines.
