Hi Kimberley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It started baking for friends and family and turned into requests coming in for the items I would post. What started as single size cakes turned into two tier cakes! I wanted to start building something my family could be proud of. I am a 37-year-old Mother, Fiance, Full Time employee and cottage bakery owner. Although I have been baking for quite some time, it was only about 2 years ago that I began taking it more seriously. Initially, I only baked for friends and family, but after receiving numerous requests for purchases, I decided to see if this could turn into something more. Two years later, I am now making custom cakes and my most popular item – buttercream sugar cookies!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely has not been smooth all the way, I have had cake collapse, cupcakes tip over. One of the hardest things in a small town starting a business is everyone has their people they go to so you have to be patient, and God will bring you the right customers! While every business has its struggles, I have been fortunate enough to build up a loyal clientele in a town where I am not from. Despite the challenges, my repeat customers and new customers continue to come daily and refer others to me. As a result, my business has flourished and I am grateful for the opportunities and support from my customers.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make cakes and cookies ! My most popular item is my buttercream sugar cookies. I can do any theme, color or even a personalized photo on them. As a knowledgeable and experienced professional in the bakery industry, I have the ability to bring my customers’ visions to life through a variety of baked goods, including cakes, cookies, and mini desserts. My recipes are carefully crafted, using a secret ingredient in my homemade buttercream frosting that sets it apart from other bakeries. Plus, as a cottage bakery, I am able to offer affordable prices without the added overhead costs of larger establishments, making it easier for customers to stay within their budget.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Be patient with yourself and when mistakes do happen as they will we are not all perfect at all take accountability for them and make your customer happy. To start your own bakery or business, it is essential to practice patience and give yourself grace. Success does not happen overnight, but with perseverance, it will come. Remember to take accountability and learn from mistakes to grow and improve
