Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Diaz.
Hi Juan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Wilson County No Kill Animal Shelter is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that began in 2015 with a simple mission: to help the animals of our county. It was founded by a couple of dedicated women who wanted to promote spay and neuter programs, responsible pet ownership, and make sure animals were cared for when they were abandoned or mistreated.
Over the years, the organization grew with the help of past administrations and strong community support.
My personal journey started in 2025 when my wife “voluntold” me to help with maintenance and much-needed contract work at the shelter. As time went on, I kept stepping in wherever I was needed. Through the ups and downs, I stayed committed because I believed in the mission and wanted to see the organization succeed.
At the beginning of 2026, I became part of the new Board of Directors as Vice President. We are now in a major transition, rebuilding under a new name—Wilson County Adoption and Rescue Services—and working to move the organization forward in a positive direction.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. As a new board, we stepped into a situation with existing debt and a lot of unknowns from previous years. We’re essentially rebuilding while still operating day to day, which has been a challenge.
Another major factor is that we are not a government-funded shelter like some others. We rely completely on donations, grants, and community support to survive. That alone can make things difficult, especially when trying to maintain operations and improve at the same time.
Despite that, we’ve made progress. We’ve applied for multiple major grants and continue to pursue more. H-E-B approved us for $5,000 in funding, and our local Walmart awarded us a $250 grant. We’re also working hard to reduce debt and build a stronger financial foundation.
We’ve had great support from Wilson County Animal Alliance as well their help has been critical in allowing us to continue what we do.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
With a professional background in operations, construction, and organizational management, I bring a hands on approach to the organization. I assist with facility planning, budgeting, compliance, and problem solving essentially helping strengthen the foundation of the rescue so it can continue to grow and operate effectively. I’m known for stepping in where needed, whether that’s behind the scenes or on-site, making sure challenges are addressed and progress keeps moving forward.
What I’m most proud of is being part of the current turnaround and rebuilding phase of the organization. As a new board, we’ve taken on significant challenges, including financial obstacles and restructuring, and we’re working hard to put the rescue on a path toward stability and long-term success. Seeing that progress, even in small steps, is something I take a lot of pride in.
What sets me apart is my willingness to do whatever is needed to support the mission. I didn’t start in a leadership role I started by helping with maintenance and contract work and that perspective keeps me grounded. I understand the importance of every role within the organization, from volunteers to leadership, and I lead with that mindset.
Family and community involvement are also a big part of what drives me. My family and I actively support the rescue through volunteering, outreach, and promoting responsible pet ownership. I believe building strong community connections is key to long term success, and that real impact comes from people working together.
At the end of the day, I’m committed to helping create an organization that the community can trust one that not only rescues animals, but also brings people together, supports families, and creates better outcomes for everyone involved.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Determination is the biggest factor. No matter the challenges financial, operational, or organizational we’ve stayed committed to the mission.
It also takes teamwork and community support. We’ve created a dedicated fundraising committee and continue to look for volunteers because we know we can’t do this alone.
At the end of the day, it’s about not giving up. The animals depend on us, and that’s what keeps us pushing forward, even when things get tough.
