Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Backlas-cruz
Hi Joy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a 23-year-old medical school drop out. All my life, my physician parents were preparing me to become a dermatologist, because I’d been struggling with severe allergies, eczema, and later, cystic acne; no doctor could cure me. I went to a medical high school and then enrolled in an 8-year undergrad-to-medical school program. As a college sophomore, I was the sickest and saddest I’ve ever been. I knew something had to change, so I switched from my raw vegan diet to carnivore. In one month, 20 years of eczema cleared, 10 years of cystic acne cleared, and my brain fog lifted. Health guidelines were either innocently wrong or a lie. As I dove into research to spot other innocent errors or lies, I developed interest in politics and culture. Meanwhile, since my skin was cleared, my parents suggested I orient away from dermatology and towards gynecology and IVF, since I was an IVF baby and I could help grow the industry. They noted that with this extended career plan, I myself would probably need it to conceive. But I didn’t want this. I wanted a younger family and I felt I could make a bigger and broader difference influencing the side of demand rather than the side of supply, the side of the people. I walked away from my career path, I fell in love, I work as a political and cultural influencer with Joy Backlas-Cruz Media LLC, and I am driving my own life. My new-found purpose is to give my future children a nation of safety, health, and opportunity. For that, I will fight.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to my career was anything but smooth. There was tension with my parents as I left medical school behind. I lost most of my friends for voicing my opinions. But over time, I built a supportive network and am now the happiest I’ve ever been.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For work, I use media platforms to discuss current political events and explain their cultural significance, drawing parallels to similar events in history. It is a unique blend of current events, history, and anthropology and their interconnections. I am most proud of the messages that I get from young people telling me that my videos have opened their minds.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I am most at home in San Antonio’s rolling hills when the bluebonnets are in bloom. My least favorite part of San Antonio is the river walk after 10pm.
