Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Tlynn
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey as a DJ is deeply rooted in my upbringing and passions. From a young age, I’ve always been drawn to music, spending my free time creating beats and melodies in my bedroom. This love for music, combined with the frequent moves of my childhood, sparked my fascination with different places and cultures. As I grew older and began traveling to new states and countries, I fell in love with the diverse sounds and rhythms I encountered. I didn’t just listen to music; I analyzed it, noticing connections between unfamiliar genres and the sounds I already knew. One thing that stood out to me was how, outside the U.S., so many genres of music inspire people to dance and fully enjoy the moment.
I decided to pursue DJing when I realized I had something unique to offer. In my environment, I often noticed people being overly reserved, sticking to familiar music, venues, and DJs. It didn’t feel like they were truly letting loose and having fun. My goal as a DJ is to change that—to introduce people to new cultures and sounds while creating a safe space where they can let go of their worries, issues, and egos. Through my sets, I aim to normalize dancing, joy, and genuine fun, helping people reconnect with the pure enjoyment of music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall, things have been as smooth as I could have hoped for so far. The challenges I’ve faced are mostly tied to the learning curve that comes with starting any new hobby or career. For me, this has included navigating the social aspects of DJing and event hosting, such as building connections, networking with business owners, and establishing a presence. One of the biggest hurdles for most DJs—especially those without prior connections—is getting booked. Realistically, if nobody knows who you are and you don’t have anyone to vouch for you, securing gigs, particularly on busier nights, can be very difficult. For me, the greatest challenges have been securing consistent bookings and developing marketing strategies that resonate with people who may not know anything about me or the venues I work with but still feel compelled to attend the events I host.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an open-format DJ, best known for my project this year called True Mashup. This event celebrates the fusion of people, music, and cultures, offering something for everyone while encouraging attendees to explore new cultures and share their own. As a DJ, I specialize in blending multiple genres, with a focus on Afrobeats, Dancehall, R&B, and Hip-Hop, though my repertoire extends far beyond those styles.
What I’m most proud of is the way I’ve pursued my goals and visions without hesitation, even when the path felt unfamiliar or challenging. I’m also deeply grateful for the positive reactions from the public to my performances and events—they affirm my passion and purpose.
What truly sets me apart as a DJ is my diverse musical selection, my ability to read and engage a crowd, and the unique way I interpret and present music. These qualities allow me to create an unforgettable experience that resonates with people from all walks of life.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is my religion, family, and community. Those are the things have, and continue, to shape me as a man. Consistently proven to feed and drive me; I intentionally tend to, and put energy into those 3 things.
