Today we’d like to introduce you to Destinie Bruno.

Destinie Bruno

Hi Destinie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I moved from Fort Worth to San Antonio one year ago when I was promoted at my former job. I have always loved gardening since I was a child. However, moving from a house to an apartment changed how I could continue my hobby. So, instead of growing pumpkins or wildflowers, I became infatuated with foliage and other patio-friendly house plants. Before long, both of my patios looked like an urban jungle. So, in the spirit of learning, I started making educational videos on how to care for your houseplants. My plant videos on TikTok did well, and people started asking if they could buy cuttings. Then it dawned on me. I could share my love for plants and gardening with my community and make some extra income! My first pop-up was at a local bar called Near Dark a few months ago. Since then, I have done six markets and developed my brand, “Degenerate Gardener.”

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My transition from Fort Worth to San Antonio was anything but smooth, but I have grown to love this city. Caring for my plants became more therapeutic after I lost my relationship and full-time job, so I have leaned hard into my plant business over the last six months. Honorable mention to my Grandma Cheryl, who has supported me spiritually and directly by donating materials for my business. She has made things much easier for me!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m proud that almost all the materials used for my markets are recycled or secondhand. And all of the crystallized bones are ethically sourced. My goal is to be as sustainable and conscientious as possible. And that’s where the name “Degenerate Gardener” comes from partially. The aesthetics of my business are inconsistent. Sometimes, my propagations are in my empty skincare bottles. Sometimes, they’re in a vintage bottle I found at a thrift store. It’s always a surprise, ethical, and just a little weird.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people are surprised that I’m not a local or that my work outside of “Degenerate Gardener” involves photography and social media management.
