Rising Stars: Meet Ali Khan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Khan.

Ali, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I wrote about food for magazines and digital publications for 10 years before landing my series, Cheap Eats on Cooking Channel.

After that initial break into food television, I joined the judge’s table at Chopped and Chopped Jr, appeared in multiple seasons of Best Thing I Ever Ate and hosted the series Spring Baking Championship for Food Network.

I’ve also created a series for Tastemade’s initial app launch and appeared most recently on The Food That Built America for History Channel and is soon to be a judge on Supermarket Stakeout with Iron Chef Alex Guarnaschelli.

Beyond food, I also co-host a digital series for Austin FC, an MLS club. Follow me @alikhaneats on all major social platforms as well as my blog on alikhaneats.com.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Breaking into television was a 10-year journey. There were many times when I felt like I threw in the towel only to have a spark bring me back into the hunt. It is a hard road, whether you’re at the beginning or even after some success.

All you can do is believe you belong, keep your mind focused on the work; creating content that you believe has value to others. Life often becomes a challenge itself. I remember taking my 1-year-old to a taco shack in LA so I could write a blog post. I couldn’t afford daycare at the time so he had to come with me.

I remember parking, holding the steering wheel, and asking myself “what am I doing?” Fast forward four years later and we are both shooting a segment for Best Thing I Ever ate on Food Network. Keep the faith.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a television host with a focus on food television.

My breakout series, Cheap Eats, ran for 5 seasons on Cooking Channel, internationally on Food Network, and currently is streaming in Discover Plus.

I’ve hosted Food Network’s Spring Baking Championship, appeared on multiple seasons of Best Thing I Ever Ate, and judged Chopped, Chopped Jr, and Supermarket Stakeout.

Recently appeared in Food That Built America for History Channel. Recently jumped into sports as a co-host for a digital series for Austin FC, an MLS club.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
We all have goals, some are loftier than others. I can honestly say that while I haven’t met my financial goals for success, I do believe I have hit some lofty career goals, namely starring in my own TV show.

And I have doors that have been opened because of that. The game ain’t over yet, but I’m happy with how far I have come. So how do I define success? Think about the biggest dream you have or had. Then ask yourself how close you are to that dream.

That should tell you how successful you are. Success ain’t the biggest boat in the marina. It’s looking back at your life and seeing how far you have come.
