My name is Zhen Tao Main, and I am a proud immigrant, entrepreneur, beauty expert, and motivational speaker. I am the owner of a successful day spa, a skincare formulator, and a mentor for aspiring entrepreneurs. My journey has been one of resilience, growth, and determination. Today, I’m here to share my story—a story of building a life and business from scratch in a foreign country and overcoming challenges to turn dreams into reality.
I grew up in a poor little town. My father passed away when I was very young, leaving my mother to raise my siblings and me on her own. We had no money and often no food to eat. As a child, I watched my mother work tirelessly in the fields, dealing with snakes and leeches. In the hot summer, she worked under the blazing sun, drenched in sweat. Watching her struggle, I made a vow—I would give my mother a better life when I grew up.
Because of poverty, I hated that kind of life. I once asked my mother, “Is everyone in the world like us?” She told me about a country where robots did all the work, and people controlled everything with remote controls. Nobody had to labor in the fields. After hearing that story, I dreamed of going to that country every day. I would look up at the sky, the sun, and the moon, wishing that one day, my dream would come true.
Eventually, I came to that country. I thought it would be heaven, but it wasn’t what I had imagined. In this unfamiliar land, I had to start everything from scratch. I couldn’t speak English, I couldn’t drive, and I didn’t understand the culture. The beginning was incredibly difficult, but I knew I had to survive because I still had my dreams.
At first, I learned everything from my husband, slowly getting to know this country. Since I was a child, I had always loved beauty. One day, I went to a salon, but the hairstylist did a terrible job with my hair. I was furious, but then I thought, if I could learn her skills, I could help others and do a better job than she did. That moment inspired me.
I began looking for beauty schools and started my career. After graduating, I worked in various places, gaining valuable experience. But I had a bigger dream—I wanted to open my own shop and be my own boss. When I told my husband about this, he strongly opposed the idea. He believed a woman’s place was at home, not running a business.
We had many arguments, but I stood firm. Eventually, he kicked me out of the house and cut off all financial support. Even so, I didn’t give up on my dream. I went from being penniless and homeless to opening my own shop. More than 20 friends, family members, and customers came together to help me get started.
In the beginning, it was extremely hard. I couldn’t drive, didn’t know the roads, and my English was terrible. I was afraid to answer phone calls, didn’t know how to interact with customers, and had no idea how to manage a business. Step by step, I taught myself everything.
With my broken English, I started learning how to advertise online, how to communicate with customers, and how to promote my business. I also had to learn bookkeeping, understand legal requirements, master sales techniques, and figure out how to manage a team. Over time, I became a jack-of-all-trades, learning everything from marketing and management to legal knowledge.
As I ran my business, my passion for beauty and products grew stronger, especially skincare. I wanted to learn how to design and create my own products with unique formulas. I started studying how to make organic skincare formulas, combining science and beauty to create safe and effective products. This not only fueled my passion but also opened up new possibilities for my brand.
However, the journey of growth was very slow. I realized that to build a brand, I needed more learning and effort. I wanted to create my own products and formulas and share my experience with others. So, I started exploring education, writing books, and even giving speeches. Step by step, I grew into the person I am today—a completely different person than I was seven years ago. Now, I can confidently stand on a stage and communicate in fluent English. I’m no longer afraid of anything.
This is the story of how I, an immigrant in America, built my business from nothing. I learned, worked hard, and grew step by step, with no one to rely on but myself. I often worked late into the night, rarely taking a break. Sometimes, when I felt exhausted and overwhelmed, I would sit in my shop and cry. But the next day, I would pick myself up and continue working toward my future.
What has always driven me is the thought of my mother. I want to give her and my family a better life. That has always been my purpose. Whenever I feel tired or discouraged, I think of her and the promise I made when I was a child. That thought gives me the strength to keep chasing my dreams, no matter how hard the journey may be.
And now, I want to leave you with this thought: No matter where you come from or what challenges you face, your dreams are valid, and they are possible. Start where you are, with what you have, and take one step at a time.
If I could build my dream from nothing, you can too. The key is to never give up, even when the road feels impossible. Remember, every little step brings you closer to the life you want.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped who I am today.
When I first came to the United States, I didn’t speak English, couldn’t drive, and had no understanding of the culture. Everything felt overwhelming and foreign. I had to start from scratch, often feeling isolated and uncertain about my future.
One of the biggest struggles was facing resistance from my husband when I decided to pursue my dream of opening my own business. He believed a woman’s place was at home, and when I refused to give up, he cut off all financial support and kicked me out of the house. I was left with no money and no home, but I was determined to keep going.
Starting my spa was incredibly difficult. I was afraid to answer phone calls because of my limited English. I didn’t know how to manage a business, market my services, or handle finances. On top of that, I didn’t understand the laws—everything from business permits and contracts to tax requirements felt confusing and overwhelming. I had to spend a lot of time researching, asking questions, and learning step by step to ensure I followed the rules and avoided costly mistakes.
To make things even harder, I didn’t have any family here to support me. Everything I accomplished, I did by myself. From building my business to managing daily struggles, I had to rely entirely on my own strength and determination.
There were moments of exhaustion and doubt. I often worked long hours, and when things felt overwhelming, I would sit in my shop and cry. But every morning, I picked myself back up and kept moving forward.
The journey of growth was slow, but step by step, I built my business. I learned to embrace challenges as opportunities to grow and refused to let setbacks define me. The road wasn’t smooth, but it was worth every struggle because it led me to where I am today.
If anything, my journey has taught me that resilience, determination, and faith can overcome any obstacle. Every struggle was a stepping stone to success, and for that, I am grateful.

Don’t let limited resources hold you back. Begin with what you have and take consistent, small steps forward. At the same time, keep your bigger vision in mind. Imagine where you want to be in 5 or 10 years and let that inspire you. No matter how small the beginning, dreaming big gives you direction and purpose.
Face Your Fears and Embrace Your Identity
When I started, I was scared of my broken English and felt isolated as an Asian immigrant. I worried about being judged or misunderstood, which often held me back. But I learned that my background and unique experiences made me stand out. Instead of seeing them as weaknesses, I began to embrace them as strengths. Don’t let fear stop you. Speak up, show up, and remember that your story and perspective are valuable.
Systemize and Stay Organized
One of the most important lessons I learned was the value of creating systems. Whether it’s organizing your workflow, managing finances, or improving customer service, having efficient processes in place will save you time and reduce stress. Systemization also helps you handle growth when it comes. Invest in tools, software, or habits that keep your business running smoothly, and you’ll have more energy to focus on what matters most.
Network, Collaborate, and Be Visible
Don’t try to do it all alone. Building relationships is key to success. Collaborate with others, connect with your community, and put yourself out there. Be active on social media, attend events, and share your story. Early in my journey, I was hesitant because of my fear of being judged, but I wish I had started sooner. Visibility opens doors to opportunities and builds trust with your audience.

Mistakes are part of the process, and they don’t mean failure. Every setback teaches you something valuable. When things don’t go as planned, don’t dwell on it—reflect, adjust, and move forward. What I Wish I Knew:
I wish I had known earlier that my challenges, like language barriers and isolation, would eventually become my strengths. I also wish I had started networking, collaborating, and being active on public platforms sooner, as these are vital for growth. Most importantly, I wish I had believed in myself earlier and trusted that every step, no matter how difficult, was leading me closer to my goals.
