Meet Vanessa Vargas of Southside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Vargas.

Hi Vanessa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always liked to bake, but it was until my son encouraged me to start up a business that I finally gave it a run. I have always been a people person and, as they say, I have never met a stranger. I feel like baking helps me connect with people in different ways. Cakes, cookies, brownies and anything sweet are always at all types of events, so I thought this was my in. I have been in business for 3 years now and even with its ups and downs I feel like I’m in it for the long run!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I can’t say it’s been 100% cake, pun intended, but I do think I’m extremely blessed for the connections I have made. In the beginning, I had those supporters that were ordering day and night, and then it seemed like business just kind of stalled out. In the slow times when a month would go by and no orders would come in, it would have me doubting if I was going to make it or if it was just some sort of fad. In the sweets business, there is someone in every neighborhood, every corner, and every circle of friends, so being able to have those loyal and repeat customers has been what keeps me going and wanting more.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a baker who specializes in anything sweet. I am actually known for my brownies, which sound very basic, but it’s things like that that set me apart. I love to take something simple that reminds you of being a kid or going to Grandma’s house and having the yummiest fresh baked cookie and making it better. I am that baker who can make you something tiny or give you an amazing wedding, quinceañera, or even just an out-of-this-world kind of cake. I am proud of being able to have those customers, and shall I say, friends come back when it is such a saturated business. I strive to make my tagline true, which is “Let us be the heart of your sweet tooth.”

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that our city has such a rich culture and so many backgrounds that you can find almost anything you can dream of. I really love San Antonio but the thing that I dislike about it is there’s a lot of crime, but I feel it’s because there’s not enough readily available resources to show people there’s more to the world. We try to give back as much as possible and having my business helps with that, but it’s a community issue we need to come together to tackle.
