Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Anthony Monreal aka Big SAM Heard.
Hi, Steve Anthony Monreal; thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born and raised in San Antonio, I’m a third-generation River Rat. I have worked in hospitality for the past 22 years, but recently, I picked up podcasting during COVID. I’ve been strong with it for four years, tapping in with the local music scene here in the city. I have as many upcoming artists as I can. That way, they know they’re not alone and have a platform. I am very passionate about what I do, but my real love is food. I plan to have my own food truck and restaurant. I’m known for putting the little Christmas tree in front of the Alamo in 2017 when the city moved the huge Christmas tree to Travis Park. Seeing all the memories and still having people talk about it when they sometimes notice me is cool.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s not a smooth road, but at least I’m getting somewhere and not stuck on the side of the road. I try to stay as positive as I can, but sometimes, my depression does get the best of me, and other people notice when I’m in the funk.
Thanks for sharing that. Please tell us more about your work.
Recently, I’ve been known for having my podcast- We’re on!Podcast also live in The BoneZone with Big SAM Heard, where I pay homage to rap Legends Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. I go to as many local shows as possible to support artists, but it gets rough sometimes. I’m most proud of not giving up on life because there were times when I didn’t want to live and attempted to take my life, but I know things happen for a reason, and I’m happy to be still alive. What sets me apart from others? I’m just a unique person with a one-of-a-kind personality. I love everyone and try to do what I can for everyone when I can. I know what it’s like not to have much, so what I do have, I offer, especially regarding the podcast. I like to enjoy what I’m doing and not take it so seriously even though it is a business, and I do need to sharpen the edges, but people like the rawness. They like the realness, and I hope they enjoy my content. My goal is to teach people something, even if it’s just about life, maybe get them to laugh and, hell, even sometimes, cry. I’m also known for the burgers I make from home. I won’t tell you much about that, but you have to try them yourself.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am a huge foodie and hope to open a food truck and a restaurant one day.
