Meet Serenity Abrams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Serenity Abrams.

Hi Serenity, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved here with my family in the fall of 2015 and really didn’t know what path in life I was going to take. I applied for volunteer work with an organization called Merced Housing Texas, through Americorps. It gave me the opportunity to be introduced to the city in a different way than most transplants do. Through that experience, I decided teaching was my route so I took my exams with Texas Teachers, passed, and taught Special Education for about 3 years. Between then and now, so many life changes created the opportunity for me to become an entrepreneur. I always knew I couldn’t work for anyone else and that it was the only path I knew would work. I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My mother, one of the more influential people in my life, has been changing lives of people with natural hair for decades and it was such a natural transition for me because that is what I grew up around. So once Covid hit, I knew I had to figure my life out. So I decided to turn a hobby into a business. At the start of covid, I had maybe less than 10 clients. I hustled hard, got certified in natural and locs, and build Bomb Ass Naturals from the ground up. I take pride in not just the physical way I change clients’ appearance, but also in the way they feel spiritually when they leave my chair. I am currently going back to grassroots in education by blending both worlds together. It is not just about making money doing hair, it is about changing the way people think and believe in themselves. I truly believe this is my calling, to inspire and motivate others who are just as passionate as I am.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has definitely NOT been smooth and if any entrepreneur tells you that, they’re lying. There were many days I questioned my capabilities and to be honest sometimes I still do, but I think that humble mentality keeps you on your toes. I started this business through covid, took one client per day until restrictions lifted then added more little by little. While the work itself is effortless, it is the drive, the trying to stay motivated even on my worst mental health days, and keeping up with my own family as they grow and change. Even on my most difficult days, the people who choose to have me in their presence, to bless their hair and even just exist together, make it all worth it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a certified Natural Hairstylist and Loctician. The great thing about Texas is that natural hair is deregulated so u do not need a license to operate. I currently specialize in loc repair, loc extensions, and microlocs. I’d like to say I’m known for having fast hands without disrupting the quality of hair. I get most clients out in about an hour and that sets me apart from just about everyone else. I am most proud of the way I have branded myself and my business. I am a very open person so I enjoy people from all walks of life, no matter what their journey is and how they ended up in my chair. I take on pretty much any challenge presented to me and never judge.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
There are many things, tangible and not, that bring me happiness. First, is being an entrepreneur because it lets me be able to make my own schedule so that I can tend to my children. It’s important to me that I make every single game or event because I didn’t have that in my childhood. So no matter how successful I get, my family will always be a priority. Water and nature bring me peace and happiness. I love going to Lake Travis and hopping in just to float around. Walking barefoot in grass keeps me grounded. Hiking connects me to the universe around me. My peace is important to me and I will do anything it takes to preserve my peace.

I love to see healthy, natural hair. This is an excellent article about this hair professional. I saw her speak at the Peoria Illinois Natural Hair Conference earlier this month. Bravo Ms Serenity Abrams!
