Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Grimaldo.
Hi Sam , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I knew I wanted to go into psychology since high school. I initially thought I wanted to be a psychologist and realized I wanted a more direct therapeutic approach and therefore rerouted to LPC, LMFT. I initially debated getting a Master of Divinity (MDiv) and going into ministry. Once I made the decision, I started my Masters in Counseling at St. Edwards University in Austin, TX for a dual License as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
After working for years in residential treatment centers at all levels of care I decided to step into Private Practice. I started Grimaldo Counseling to work with relationships, trauma, and addiction.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
People often do not realize the hurdles a fully licensed therapist has to jump through and the ongoing financial commitment after getting your degree. There are thousands of supervised hours, we have to pay for weekly supervision over the course of 2 years at a minimum all while usually not making a decent salary while considered an intern. Also, getting your degree is only the start. It provides a healthy foundation only, but in order to become specialized and actually improve your skills you will need to pursue additional training and certifications. These certifications can also take years.
It is definitely worth it though if you want to increase your clinical skills and provide quality care.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Grimaldo Counseling?
I believe our relationships are our most important resource as humans. I also believe the quality of a persons life is tied to the quality of the relationships around them. I think most people at some level understand that we are designed and created for connection and in the absence of this understand there is pain and suffering. However, there are many reasons people cannot build healthy relationships due to trauma, insecurities, anxiety, or depression. It is my passion to help people strengthen their relationships. I do this by offering couples counseling and I am a certified EMDR therapist who works with trauma. I also believe Addiction is often a symptom not the actual problem and it always impacts relationships.
Overall, I want to help people overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of building healthy and thriving relationships with others and themselves.
What makes you happy?
Spending time with my family and friends. My wife and I have 3 kids 5 and under, including twins. Life is busy! Very Busy! I enjoy spending quality time with my wife and children. We love hiking, biking, going on road trips, or just exploring San Antonio and the Hill Country. Making time for these activities and being outdoors definitely brings richness and fullness to my life.
