Meet Roger Woodard of Studio 27 hair salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roger Woodard

Hi Roger, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey began with a vision of hair excellence and a commitment to outstanding customer service. One day, I decided to turn that vision into reality by opening my own salon. I wanted to create a space where both clients and employees could thrive.

From the start, I placed a strong emphasis on education, believing that a well-trained & educated team would lead to exceptional service. I sought out global educators to provide my staff with top-notch training, including opportunities for continued education at the prestigious Goldwell Academy, in New York City.

With dedication and passion, all of these elements came together to form Studio 27 Hair Salon, where we focus not only on delivering beautiful results but also on fostering a culture of learning and support within our team.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has certainly had its challenges. One significant struggle has been understanding our clients’ needs before they even voice them, which involves learning to read different personality types effectively. Additionally, I’ve come to realize that not every staff member should be trained or educated in the same manner; tailoring our approach to individual learning styles has been crucial.

In the beginning, I adopted a more relaxed attitude, which turned out to be a valuable learning experience. I quickly learned the importance of ensuring that my staff felt respected and worked cohesively as a team.

Understanding the various elements that contribute to a successful business was another major hurdle. It’s essential to consider not only the guest experience but also the staff experience, along with the culture, education, and marketing strategies.

While I can confidently say that things have become easier over time, I recognize that I’m still learning every day and continually striving for excellence in all aspects of the salon.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First and foremost, I would say that all our success is possible because of our dedicated team of employees and our loyal clientele; without them, we would be nothing.

I’ve been fortunate to have several mentors along my journey, one of whom is Carlos Alvarez, the owner of Trademark Salon & Spa. He has not only been a mentor but also a remarkable role model. Carlos has provided invaluable business advice and has taught me many techniques in hair coloring and styling that I’ve been able to share with my staff.

I’d also like to highlight a fantastic client of mine, Kathy Rubin, who has been with me since day one. Her unwavering support has been instrumental, and she has often been a great friend I can confide in. I always joke that she’s on the board of directors—although we don’t actually have one, if we did, she would certainly have a seat!

These individuals, along with our incredible team and clients, have played a significant role in our success, and I am deeply grateful for their support.
