Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Overman
Hi Robert, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey is one of resilience, passion, and transformation. At 21, I hit a low point in my life, facing personal loss and heartbreak. Searching for an outlet, I found inspiration in Step Up 3, particularly from B-boy Cloud, which sparked my journey into dance. Determined to learn, I trained myself, channeling negative energy into positive action. Through persistence, YouTube tutorials, and joining UTSA’s dance group U.D.E.K., I refined my skills and overcame stage fright, eventually earning the nickname Trigger for always stepping up first in performances. As a core member, I gave back to the campus by hosting Freestyle Fridays!
Dance opened doors, connecting me with breakers performing for the San Antonio Spurs. Training with them led me to audition for Spurs Entertainment, where I earned a spot and experienced their 2014 championship celebration. Though I was cut the following season due to choreography challenges, I trained harder and later joined the newly formed Hype Squad in 2018. I stayed until 2022, becoming B-boy Captain and shaping team traditions. During this time, I also worked with the Coyote mascot and even had the opportunity to perform at halftime for a Harlem Globetrotters game. I was later offered a touring position but turned it down to stay close to my newborn daughter.
As my social media presence grew, I faced an unexpected challenge—a B-boy with the same nickname, Trigger, claiming to be the original. This led to some “online beef,” inspiring me to rebrand as RobbyTrigger to distinguish myself from other dancers.
In 2020, I expanded beyond dance into entertainment, becoming a mime, fire performer, and multi-talented artist, thanks to Breakthrough Entertainment. I now collaborate with multiple entertainment companies, constantly evolving my skills. In 2021, I ventured into 3D printing, creating cosplay props inspired by my love for Daft Punk, with hopes of becoming a recognized builder and attending Comic-Con in the future. By 2022, I discovered a passion for modeling and photography through S.A. Creatives, becoming an ambassador and blending dance with fashion. This led to collaborations with other dancers, major event performances, and videography projects, including 360° videos. I am also part of Models of Texas!
Beyond entertainment, I joined Cypher Movement, a nonprofit using dance and faith to support troubled youth. Having faced hardships myself, I find purpose in mentoring others. In 2023, I welcomed my son, completing my small family. Despite my busy schedule, I cherish time with them and prioritize creating meaningful memories, especially through themed holiday photography.
Currently, I work at Digital Pro Lab, the last physical photo lab in San Antonio. This job has deepened my understanding of photography, enhancing my own work and creative experiences. I’m grateful for everyone who has played a role in my journey and look forward to continuing my exploration of photography while balancing my other passions, family, and ambitions.
I view life like a video game—constantly leveling up, embracing challenges, and encouraging others to pursue their dreams without fear. I hope my story inspires others to do the same!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My life has been anything but easy. Growing up in the small town of Rockport, I faced early challenges, including an abusive stepfather and financial struggles that left me envious of those with more privilege. For years, I had to choose between living with my mom in Rockport or moving in with my dad in San Antonio. In high school, I made the permanent move to San Antonio as there was more opportunity here.
Overcoming insecurities and shyness was a long journey, but a turning point came at 21 when tragedy struck. Starting late in dance and other ambitions, I had to work three times as hard to carve my own path. Even now, I sometimes feel behind, facing rejection due to my age or skill level. Balancing work, family, and community involvement remains a constant challenge, making personal growth difficult.
One of the most defining hardships of my life was losing a close friend, whom I saw as a little brother, to a tragic work accident. His passing deeply affected me, leading me to step away from dance for a while. However, his memory now fuels my drive to live life fully—not just for myself, but for him as well.
Being a known dancer in the community has its perks, but it also comes with sacrifices. Time with family is limited, and while dance provides good income, it isn’t stable enough to rely on, so I maintain a regular job. Thankfully, my current job is a significant improvement over past ones.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I come from a dance background, specializing in Breakdance (or Bboying, the proper term). Creativity is at the core of who I am, and I love blending dance with videography, photography, and collaborating with different creatives and perspectives. What I’m most proud of are the connections and experiences I’ve built in such a short time, especially since I started my professional journey later than most. What makes me stand out is the energy I bring and the way I connect with others, staying true to my old-school approach to life!
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’m grateful for this opportunity and hope my story can inspire others who have faced similar challenges. It’s never too late to chase your dreams and ambitions—I’m living proof of that! If nothing else, remember this: I believe in YOU!
