Meet OG Kee of Killeen

Today we’d like to introduce you to OG Kee.

OG Kee

Hi OG; we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Music has been a part of my life since I was a little girl. I learned how to play the piano at a very young age, leading me to perform in recitals and at church. From then on, I would learn how to write small poems and jingles with my family. I was always good at English, so I took AP English in high school. We got an assignment to create a rap about figurative language, and when the assignment was completed, my family realized I could rap. I joked about it for a while until one day in college; I decided to take it seriously and pursue a rap career. I graduated college and started releasing music. I took a brief time off from releasing music to reflect and refocus. Still writing and creating in that period, I began finding my sound and purpose. From that moment on, I went full force into the rap game without plans to stop. I just started performing in January of this year, and I’ve had a performance every week since. I’ve traveled to 4 different states and been a part of the BET Awards and Rolling Loud Miami events. Overall, this journey has been enriching, and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for me.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
By far, this journey has been an exciting escapade! The road to rap has been bumpy because it is the epitome of pursuing the unknown. You never know what will or will not gravitate to people. You never know people’s intentions. Some people will paint their picture of what they think you should be and aren’t interested in allowing you to be yourself. I’ve learned that the talent you have or the work you put in behind the scenes can and will be overlooked if it does not match the “agenda” of the current world. In this industry, you have to have tough skin and a good head on your shoulders. Getting caught up in the glitz and glamour that comes with the lifestyle is very easy. I’ve learned to take my time in everything I do to ensure it is of quality and substance. Staying true to myself and my morals has guided me along the way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am OG Kee, a female rapper from Killeen, TX, specializing in lyricism. Performing on a range from small to big stages, I have expanded my fan base across multiple states and even some foreign countries. I love writing music! Telling stories and expressing myself through music has been a therapeutic journey. I am proud of myself for not giving up along the way. Chasing my dreams has come with many setbacks and obstacles, but the reward at the end of the tunnel has motivated me to keep going. My talents in the booth separate me from others because I have many different life perspectives through personal experiences. I use these experiences when writing to take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions that will ultimately lead you to a life lesson.

Who else deserves credit for your story?
This journey hasn’t been a lonely one. I’ve had my parents, siblings, grandparents, and best friends by my side the entire way! I’ve met some incredible people who have poured into me as well. Coco, from Big Break Magazine, has been a shining light. All the DJs and promoters I’ve been able to work with and be a part of their platform have opened many doors for me. Wazhanin Steve has been a part of every project I’ve done. So many people have motivated me and encouraged me to chase my dreams. I’ll forever be thankful for them!
