Meet Mikey Wells

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikey Wells.

Hi Mikey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My interest in music started around the age of 6. I would bang on buckets, sing Disney tunes, and had a rather odd fascination for horror movies and the musical scores featured in them. My sister later purchased a keyboard and I started to play with it when she wasn’t using it for the piano class she was enrolled in. I started off by playing tunes I knew from memory such as Christmas songs and others I’d hear on the radio.

I eventually taught myself to fully play by ear. As you can imagine, by this time I am only around age 10 and my family noticed pretty quickly that music was in my DNA. I was not as great as I am making this sound, however, I had something I was able to quickly develop. I joined the middle school band which is where I had some formal education on how to read music. I didn’t know what I was doing until I knew what I was doing if that makes sense! Once I had a grasp on being able to read it, I was on to the next thing which was to sing.

I was pretty terrible at first. I was not one of these “little boys with a big voice” that you hear of. I had to really work at this. I practiced and performed at so many places and talent shows and dragged my mom to all of them! Once, I was in my adult years, shortly after high school, I started to produce music and tracks for myself and others but unfortunately, I would find myself giving up on this dream. This completely fell to the back burner once I started to excel at work. Work required so much of my time and music was not in my scope of realistic endeavors. After about 10 years of absolutely no musical activity, I started up again.

Only this time, I had a real purpose. I wasted 10 years of my life not doing the one thing that made sense to me. I started to produce. I started to sing. I started to write. In February of 2022, I was able to release my first project entitled, Phases! This was a huge accomplishment for me. The Mikey I am now is not the Mikey I was before. A ten-year break actually helped me! The fire I have in me now is with purpose.

I am going to keep pursuing this dream and hope it inspires anyone else with a similar background to do the same.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were plenty of struggles along the way. One of the contributing factors was losing my entire music library in a computer crash. Years of songs, production software, sounds, photos, blood, sweat, and tears were lost. Once I started to excel with my career, the mere thought of the energy it would require separately to rebuild everything I had stored away in this computer was defeating. I made no effort to recover those items until I recently had the passion to start up again.

Another deterrent of mine was not fully accepting myself as a gay man. The music I would write would not align with how I felt inside. I couldn’t see myself continuing to write lyrics about a female love interest but at the same time, I was definitely not going to write about a male love interest. My dream would end before it even started! It is a very troubling thing when you feel you have to hide from the world.

The constant front and lies I felt I had to tell in order to maintain a certain image of myself to family, friends, and colleagues were coming to a breaking point. I came out and to my surprise, nobody cared (or they already knew). It is so funny to look back and think to myself, “Mikey, you weren’t fooling anybody!”

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a music producer, singer, and songwriter. I specialize in music production but I am known for singing. I am most proud of the first official EP that I released in February of 2022 entitled, “Phases” which is available worldwide on all streaming platforms. I have released a number of singles as well.

What sets me apart from others is that I handle all my own business. I work on all my own material with an in-house recording studio. I write, sing, record, mix, master, and create all of my promotional content and album artwork on my own. I love to work with others as well and welcome all potential collaborations.

But, if I were the only artist on earth, I could still do what I love.

How do you define success?
I find that most people are successful when they find happiness. I may not be rich and famous, but I am happy with the work I have done and the milestones I have accomplished! Nobody can ever take this away from me and that is a success!
