Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Chang.
Hi Melody, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Melody Chang, and I am originally from Taiwan. After high school, I moved to the United States to pursue my passion for nutrition and healthcare. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science from the University of California, Davis in 2013, and later received my Master of Science in Nutrition from Sam Houston State University in 2014, with a minor in Public Health.
I am a kidney dietitian, board certified by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese. My professional journey has taken me through several areas of nutrition care, including working as a clinical dietitian in the acute care hospital setting and serving as a Manager of Nutritional Services in long-term care and assisted-living communities. I have taught Nutrition and Food Service Management courses at Sam Houston State University. Those experiences helped shape my skills as a dietitian and ultimately led me to discover the field I feel most passionate about: renal nutrition.
The majority of my career has been dedicated to caring for individuals with kidney disease. Over the years, I have worked alongside highly respected healthcare professionals in nephrology and have seen firsthand how essential nutrition is in supporting kidney health and overall well-being. Because many people living with kidney disease also face other chronic health concerns, I believe nutrition care can make a meaningful difference not only in kidney outcomes, but also in quality of life as a whole.
For nearly a decade, I have also worked in the outpatient dialysis setting, helping individuals with end-stage renal disease navigate the challenges of dialysis and daily life. Most recently, I was proud to secure a partnership with The Kidney Institute, one of the few stand-alone outpatient nephrology groups in the United States recognized by the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation as a Center of Excellence. Through this partnership, I provide medical nutrition therapy to patients across various stages of chronic kidney disease, with the goal of helping slow disease progression, improve health outcomes, and support each person with individualized, compassionate care.
Today, I am also the owner of my private practice, Thrive Nutrition Consultant. Our mission is to empower people to thrive in every aspect of their health. We believe that true wellness extends beyond just the body and also includes the mind and soul. Whether someone is navigating the complexities of chronic kidney disease, managing diabetes, or simply striving for better overall health, we are here to provide guidance, education, and support every step of the way.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was moving from Taiwan to the United States after high school and adapting to a new culture, language, and education system while trying to build my future. That experience taught me resilience, independence, and the importance of perseverance.
Professionally, my journey also involved exploring different areas of dietetics before finding where I truly belonged. I worked in acute care, long-term care, assisted living, and food service management, and while each role taught me something valuable, it took time to discover that my true passion was renal nutrition. Building expertise in kidney care required years of hands-on experience, continuous learning, and dedication to supporting patients with very complex health needs.
Another challenge has been balancing the clinical side of healthcare with the desire to provide more personalized, meaningful support to patients. That was one of the reasons I decided to build my own private practice, Thrive Nutrition Consultant. Starting something of my own came with uncertainty and risk, but it has also allowed me to create a practice that reflects my mission of helping people truly thrive in every aspect of their health.
Each obstacle along the way has helped shape who I am today, both personally and professionally, and has strengthened my commitment to serving others through compassionate, individualized nutrition care.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a registered dietitian and kidney nutrition specialist, and my work is centered around helping people improve their health through personalized, evidence-based nutrition care. Over the years, I’ve worked in a variety of settings, including acute care, long-term care, assisted living, food service management, higher education, and outpatient dialysis. But the area that truly became my passion is renal nutrition.
I’m especially known for my work with individuals living with chronic kidney disease and those receiving dialysis. Supporting patients through complex health challenges has shaped so much of who I am as a practitioner. I’ve seen how powerful nutrition can be—not just in managing lab values or slowing disease progression, but in helping people feel better, live better, and regain confidence in their daily lives.
One of the things I’m most proud of is building my private practice, Thrive Nutrition Consultant. It has given me the opportunity to create the kind of care I truly believe in—care that is compassionate, individualized, and focused on the whole person. At Thrive Nutrition Consultant, our mission is to empower people to thrive in every aspect of their health. We believe wellness goes beyond the body and includes the mind and soul as well.
What sets me apart is the combination of specialized kidney expertise, years of hands-on clinical experience, and a deeply personal approach to patient care. I’m also fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese, which allows me to connect with and support a broader community. Whether someone is navigating kidney disease, managing diabetes, or simply trying to build a healthier life, I want them to feel seen, supported, and empowered every step of the way.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One thing that may surprise people is that I actually hated chemistry and renal physiology when I was in school. At the time, those subjects felt especially challenging to me, and I never would have imagined that they would later become such an important part of my career. But over time, I pushed through those struggles, grew from them, and ultimately became a board-certified kidney dietitian. I think that part of my story is a reminder that the subjects or obstacles that challenge us the most can sometimes lead us exactly where we are meant to be.
