Meet Mason Mullins of Nw San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Mullins.

Hi Mason, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started running equipment young, maybe 7 or 8 years old. We have a family ranch in between Hondo and Bandera, we a descent amount of equipment out there. I remember being on a big front end loader while my dad was blading windrows and I’d be scooping them up for him and dumping it on a dam we were rebuilding. I couldn’t sit down because my legs couldn’t reach the pedals, so I had to stand. Fast forward 10 years I started working for a septic company and I was always on bigger pieces properties. I was able to prove myself on a piece of equipment to the land owners and so I started asking them if they needed stuff done you know maybe some roads here some clear here stock tank there you know things of that nature. I must’ve been 19 years old and I bought my first skid loader. It was only a $20,000 machine but I still had to finance it. Obviously that was broke. My dad helped me out with a trailer a little bit so I had everything I needed really just to get started and so what I did I worked you know a full-time job and after work I’d get off work about 58 5 PM then after I’ll go and work at these jobs until dark you know 2 to 3 hours Then every weekend I’ve worked that machine Saturday Sunday and then every day after work I never I didn’t have a life that way, but I was making really good money and I’ll get my name out there and so it kinda is one thing went to another people started calling me. I had a guy named Trenton hoarder That he was kind of my token into quitting my daily job and going out on my own. he was a developer that had these big jobs. I was just I mean ideal I would you know clear lot lines on these. You know a couple hundred acre place and and I would I would contract a defensing out you know so I make money on that and do all the driveway is clear and you know name it if that was real good for the first couple years I mean, I made a lot of money. I did very well for myself and then he got to stop by and lands and everything dried up with that, but now now things have gotten a little slow again and we’re making it slowly but surely, but he’s out of the picture now so

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. It’s been a very bumpy road and it very unsure Road. First year and a half two years of business were actually outstanding. I think I had it just this is all my invoices. I think I well over well over half 1 million my first year of being self-employed and I must’ve been 24 then my second and third year came, and I kinda used up a lot of my contacts and I mean you know where to you know for so long until you gotta run out of your contacts right so I maybe invoiced for maybe like 40 50,000 that next year had to sell my Dozer which I almost had paid for yeah I was just got real real behind on payments and I was just barely scraping by barely

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Specialize in land services so I do clearing a build roads I built stock tanks. Thanks for that nature. I’m really known for my road to do. I do really good roads. I build the long ones and build good ones, and they last they don’t they don’t wash. I’ve been on road built. I haven’t washed a bit in five years so that’s something that stands out to people. Another thing that stands out is my clear and whatever I clear it just dress it up real nice in need and I mean, I won’t stop until it’s exactly the way I want it. I’m very particular about my finish work and I figured my name is printed on it. The thing that I most proud of for one was hitting my five year mark that was that was a pretty big pretty big deal that was that was a tough five years. I’ll have to say I’m proud of proud of my equipment. I’m very proud of my work. I take a lot of pride in my work. The thing that gives me my highs are seeing people‘s reaction whenever I have a I finish a job because I’ve never once in my life had anybody not like what I did and nobody made me go back in and do a better job that’s never been the case for me. I’ve always it’s always been Top-notch the best I can do always no matter it was for. I’d say that that says me apart for sure. I’m never late. I’m always on time. I do what I say. I’m gonna do and I generally blow it out or knock it out of the park you know like I do more than more than what they expect, my finished product is always always seems to be I thought

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
The place it’s got a little busy for me. I kind of prefer to stay on the outskirts down and not not inside the middle of the town, but that’s just me and well obviously for what kind of work I have that I do the things that I like the most is for the most part I guess pretty friendly you know there’s a lot of convenient things lots of good food and the things that I don’t like well I really don’t like being in the city at all so I mean those that I don’t like all the people. I’m more of a I just like my space that way.
