Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Lucero.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a 23-year-old up-and-coming freelance make-up artist and hair stylist in San Antonio, TX but I am originally from Las Vegas, NV.
As a child, I’ve always been known as a “girly girl,” watching telenovelas, playing dress-up, doing makeovers, and spending hours in front of the mirror.
It was then that my interest really sparked in makeup and hair because it wasn’t just about looking pretty but it was also fun and in a way therapeutic.
I grew up in a traditional Mexican home where makeup wasn’t necessarily allowed until you turned “quince” (15).
For this reason, there was a thrill of putting it on in the morning on the bus and rushing home to remove it before getting caught.
High school shortly followed along with severe acne breakouts causing me to experience bullying and self-esteem issues.
It was here that I found myself finding an outlet with makeup and one of the main reasons I began enjoying what I do.
It allows me to understand my clients who may have similar experiences and make them feel and look beautiful.
What seemed to be my “lowest” point in life turned out to be the momentous defining opportunity that opened the pathway for a career I love and have today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I would be lying if I said it was easy. Just like all growth in life, there were obstacles I had to overcome.
Building consistent clientele can be tough, but having a solid foundation of my supportive friends and family has facilitated the process. There is a stereotype of being a make-up artist which many think is just a hobby. As J. Cole would say, “there’s beauty in the struggle and ugliness in the success.”
Being a perfectionist doesn’t make it any easier as I am my biggest critic however I wouldn’t change anything as I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a traveling freelance makeup artist and hairstylist.
I offer the convenience of bringing the salon to you, whether it’s your living room, hotel room, or venue. You name it and I will make it happen. I am most proud of my growth of clients and the expansion of services that I offer. I specialize in bridal glam, soft glam, hairstyling, and hair color.
I am very dedicated and passionate about what I do and I definitely put in the hard work to run my business. I make sure to promote myself and give it my all, failure is not an option.
I want to inspire those around me to follow their dreams and keep pushing even when it seems like they’re going nowhere because every day is a new day to grow and blossom into something bigger.
“Choose a job that you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to always bet on yourself and take pride in your work. Despite what others may say, you are your biggest critic. You’re always going to want to do better every single time and I take something from every client and I carry that on to the next and I think that has helped me build as a stylist/artist and business owner.
