Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Vargas.
Hi Jean, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Jean Wesley Vargas Morais, but people know me as Jean Vargas. Since I was little, I always had contact with industry and engineering due to my father and the city where I lived. It was a city where the steel industry was very strong.
I have a technician’s degree in automation and I studied automation engineering until my fourth year and when I started working with it I realized that it was not what I really wanted for my life.
After that, with a lot of difficulties, I found myself in photography, where I got my bachelor’s degree and a specialization. Three years ago I started my own photography and video production company with my brother, the Original Creative Productions or just OriginalCP. I’m currently residing in Portugal doing a master’s degree in cinema.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The first thing was the struggle with my parents. I was leaving a safe work area (engineering) to a floating area, working with creativity. Another thing was my age. I started a new degree at 27 and now I’m 36 and I’m still having issues finding work besides my company. The film industry is very narrow and difficult to enter. If you are not part of a crew, it is extremely hard to fit in.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I believe that now I’m a man of the world. My time in Portugal to get my master’s degree has been interesting, even though it happened during this pandemic moment. I found out a little bit about my own creative process and how to develop it. I’m a photographer who loves to do portraits. I think a portrait is a way to tell a story, to tell something about someone, and the way people look at the camera can show powerful feelings.
I’m also working to be a cinematographer. My photography background helps me but we need to keep studying. One of my teachers use to say that I’m a hybrid student. I love the practice but I also love the theory and doing research.
So now, I photograph and do films. Advertising, business portraits, personal projects, travel films. Anything I can demonstrate what I feel. And right now, I’m going back to film photography, which makes me very happy and glad of what I can do with a camera.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
As we use to say in our company, we need three things.
- Hard work
- Creativity
- Excellence
For me, this is what I need to do a great and successful project.
We can’t get anywhere without dedicating ourselves to the fullest, with a lot of hard work in what we’re doing. Creativity to bring things into the world that just go through my mind. Excellency in everything we do, in the best way possible.
