Meet Hailey Lucios of Luscious Locks Mobile Dog Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey Lucios.

Hi Hailey, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Hailey Rose Lucios and I am the owner Luscious Locks Mobile Dog Spa.

I grew up in a small town in California called Colusa. I’ve always loved animals and would bring stray dogs and cats home all the time. It would drive my dad absolutely insane but he knew how much I wanted to help these animals so most of the time he would let them stay.

I ended up going to school for Cosmetology but shortly after attending for a few months I realized that doing hair on people was not my passion. After thinking about my career and what I wanted to do I applied to a local dog Salon in Vacaville, California. I started off as a bather. I was eager to learn to groom so the owner taught me. After awhile I decided I wanted to further my knowledge in grooming and I attended a grooming academy and got certified through there.

Fast forward a few years. My husband is in the US Airforce and got orders to Lackland AFB in 2020. We purchased our first home and I got offered a grooming position with a local mobile dog spa before moving here. I was excited to start so I moved here with 2 of our dogs & 2 cats. I was here alone for 3 months before my husband was able to officially move here as well.

August 2020 I found out I was pregnant with our baby girl. It was a huge shock and blessing to us because we were told I wouldn’t be able to to get pregnant. After being pregnant for a few months I decided I wanted to start my own Mobile Dog Spa so that I can continue doing what I love while still being able to spend as much time with our daughter as possible. I gave birth to our daughter March 27th 2021, June 1st 2021 we picked up my grooming trailer, and June 3rd was my first official day grooming as Luscious Locks Mobile Dog Spa.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest struggle in the beginning was being away from my daughter. I felt like I needed to be with her 24/7 or I wasn’t a good mom. But I realized that everything I was doing, I was doing for her. I want my daughter to look up to me and see a woman who works for what she wants and has a job that she loves. I never want my daughter to settle for anything less. I want her to know that the world is filled with endless opportunities and if she puts her mind to it than she can do/be anything she wants!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I work seven days a week to be able to accommodate my clients busy schedules. I also have an amazing groomer who works for me as well and she works 4-5 days a week in the evenings. She will eventually be starting her own Mobile business as well and I’m helping her build her clientele. Most dog salons make their groomers sign a non-compete form which may include that they can’t take client information or they can’t groom in a certain radius as them if they were to quit.

I feel as though we should help eachother achieve our goals and dreams. Who am I to hold someone back from doing something that will better their life. There are enough dogs in San Antonio to go around! I will be hiring another groomer soon and I will be helping her start her own business as well!

We specialize in all different breeds. We like to try to help and accommodate all different dogs, we love them all!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think it’s important to take a risk. We’re only here for a short time might as well do something that you can be proud of and call your own! Without risk life would be boring. Everyone who starts their own business is taking a risk, a risk that can cause them to go into major debt, or a risk of “failing”. But you shouldn’t go into anything with a negative mindset. There will always be bumps in the road but that’s just part of the journey. Life is about the journey not the destination.
