Meet Garrett Huls of Huls Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Huls

Hi Garrett, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Howdy! I’m Garrett Huls, a creative with 16 years of experience in graphic design and brand building. Originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, I’m proud to have an award-winning portfolio and a BFA in design. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working in a variety of settings, from ad agencies and newspaper production to print shops, as well as a stint in Brooklyn, New York, where I worked as an apparel designer in the streetwear industry.

My creative work has earned me recognition, including a feature in Adweek for my collaboration with the NBA, and the chance to partner with NIKE to develop four uniforms for the Classic, Statement, and City Edition programs. I also had the honor of helping shape the identity for the G-League affiliate of the San Antonio Spurs, Los Raros De Austin, where I crafted their uniforms, mascot, and creative direction. Additionally, my personal artwork has been showcased in the Whataburger Museum of Art program.

I’m skilled across many design disciplines, from creative concepting and branding to graphic design, apparel, illustration, typography, and fine art. Currently, I serve as Senior Designer for Sendero Provisions Co., and I previously held the role of Senior Graphic Designer for the San Antonio Spurs. In addition to my professional work, I run my own design studio and play ball for the Texas Dawgs sandlot baseball club.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve definitely had my ups and downs as a designer and artist. After I graduated in 2009, I was a bus boy at a seafood restaurant while I looked for design jobs. What’s really helped me is to find people who believe in what I do and support me. I’ve also learned to appreciate constructive criticism, take feedback for what it’s worth, and trust the process. Being supportive and believing in your own work are must-haves for surviving in this field, whether it’s getting critical feedback or dealing with rejections.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I started out in production design and now specialize in custom illustration and hand drawn artwork. My style incorporates a retro, Texas vibe, which is pretty unique in the industry. My biggest accomplishment is working with Nike on uniforms for the San Antonio Spurs. After working in this field for so long, I still love what I do, but if I had to pick a favorite project, it’s the uniforms I designed for the San Antonio Spurs. Another great ongoing project is the consistent work with Lone Star Beer.

I think what sets Huls Design apart is that we specifically focus on design, and leave the advertising to the agencies. That way we can really focus on what the client wants to visually communicate. We also focus on collaboration over competition, which helps when building community and meeting other artists.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
After 16 years of living and breathing design, I can say my two kids and wife matter most to me. I’m doing this for them. I want to build a solid foundation and show them first hand that anything is possible. Even being a full-time artist is still achievable.
