Meet Eva Ybarra of San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Ybarra.

Hi Eva, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a Texan or I am aTejana born here in San Antonio Texas.My dad was from Graytown tx.my mom from Leesville tx.we were migrants we worked in the fields my older brother and my sisters pick cottons,We are 9 in the family 3 brothers and 5 sisters and me I’m number 5 in the family I didn’t pick cotton but still worked in the fields hoeing.I didn’t like to work in the fields.my dream was being an artist accordionist and singer but back then,it was not that easy to make a living.I told my parents I wanted to be famous,but it took sometime for my dream to come true,Then we traveled to Arizona and still doing some field work.We came back to San Antonio tx.My dad helped me out to form a Conjunto group with my two brothers Pedro and David Ybarra,My oldest brother Pedro played the bajo sexto and my youngest brother David played the bass,My dad was our manager We tour around Texas and we recorded in different companies.Me being a lady is wasn’t easy and still is not that easy.In 1996 I was invited to teach music in Seattle wa. University for one year.I recorded for an international company and I want to mention too I’m very honored to be in hall of fame,museums and inducted to the N.E.A I’m in Texas State musician also inducted to the all Star accordionist Time Press in New York.Soon coming up a movie of yours truly it’s going to be name La Riena Del Acordeon,The Queen of The Accordion

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
.For me being a lady musician it’s been difficult because like I say this is a mens world,Some musician don’t give me the respect but not all the musicians are the same,Some of good accordionist yes they recognize the way I play the accordion. In this industry is not that easy,I’ve been ignored.I am a music lover and music make me happy and I enjoy playing for my audience I love my fans.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My group is call El Conjunto Siempre Vocalist Sandy Rodriguez and we are five members. I am musically Inclined.I was self taught,I started to play the Hohner two row accordion when I was four years old at six years old I was playing professionally with the support of my parents ,My mother didn’t want me to play the accordion she told me I was going to hurt my back she bought a piano instead and took for piano lessons, She told me that’s the right way to learn music.My father he did wanted me to play the accordion he told me that the accordion is your Key that the people were going to enjoy it more besides there was no competition back then.
