Meet Elaina Aelvoet of Cookies & Cupcakes, Eh!

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elaina Aelvoet.

Hi Elaina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved to bake. It’s my stress reliever. I would bring my baked goods into work for everyone to enjoy. More and more people kept telling me I should start selling my baked goods. I gave out cookies for free the first time in March 2015. I made my first official sale in May 2015, I was so excited!

I practiced for a long time and December 1st 2015, Cookies & Cupcakes, Eh! became a reality, and I published my Facebook and Instagram page.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Oh, definitely not. I would compare myself to other people and give up when I couldn’t make my cookies look as good as theirs. My icing gave me trouble a lot of the time. When it gets humid, I should know better than to keep working on orders, because all sorts of things go wrong. Little did I know that it takes years of practice. I still have bad days, but I know to take a deep breath and try again.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am originally from Canada and that’s where I came up with my business name. I’ve been in Texas for 25 years, but I’ll always be Canadian! I don’t specialize in any certain cookie theme or cupcakes flavor. I think baby showers are my favorite cookies to make as it’s a lot of fun to come up with designs, especially when the client wants to match it to the shower invitation. Christmas cookies have endless possibilities!

I do 2 major markets a year, both at Christmas. The rest of the year, I take custom orders. This is my side hustle. I am the practice manager at a busy veterinarian office in Castroville. While I would love to make cookies my full-time job, I believe it would take the fun out of my hobby, so I continue to bake part time, generally late into the night when the rest of my family is asleep.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love San Antonio. There is so much to do and see. There is always something going on. The cultures are very diverse and I like to learn about new customs and of course, taste all the different foods, especially the desserts!

The thing I like the least is how crowded everything is. Parking is a nightmare a lot of the time. But that is with any big city with several million people.
