Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominic Negrón.
Hi Dominic, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got to this point in my life by struggling with/against adversity and being hyper focused on my goals and dreams. I have Tourette Syndrome and had relatively severe symptoms from a young age through law school. I remember being up late every night in elementary school completing my assignments due to the severity of my tics. A simple one page assignment took me several excruciating hours to complete. I would break down multiple times a night into tears due to the sheer frustration of not being in control of my own body. I grappled with this difficulty all the way through law school and while I would not wish it upon anybody, it made me who I am and gave me the determination to see any goal through. Nothing has come easy to me and to this day, I struggle with my own body and being in control of my tics. I was bullied in school and subjected to verbal/physical abuse at the hands of my bullies. I was told by a high school math teacher that I would “never make it in college” due to the limitations caused by my Tourette. I arrived at this point in my life despite the most unfavorable of odds and in the face of immense suffering and challenges. Being a lawyer has been my goal since I was in elementary school, so I zeroed in on performing at the top of my class from that point on so that I could have the best possible chance of getting into law school and becoming an attorney. I refused to allow my disability to limit my potential and I refused to use it as an excuse to not compete to be the best at all I did. After completing law school, I opened up my own practice and then was blessed with the amazing opportunity to take over an existing law firm that had been in operation for nearly 50 years. I am married to the woman of my dreams and have two amazing, beautiful children that are the most perfect little humans anyone could imagine. I believe that our experiences shape who we are, for the better or for the worse. We have to decide which way it will shape us and whether we will use those experiences to drive ourselves to new heights or to defeat us and stifle our dreams. I think I got to where I am first and foremost by the grace of God. I also think my determination, drive, and unwillingness to give up–the audacity to believe that my limitations fueled limitless possibilities–led me to where I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, not at all! Owning my own law firm, even 10 years in has been an immense learning experience. I have made every mistake in the book. I have made bad hiring decisions. I’ve kept team members on way longer than I should have. I’ve mishandled financial aspects and have fallen short of my calling/role as a leader for my team. Building my practice has been slow and organic, and I remember struggling just to pay for gas during my first few years of practice. I know all too well how it feels to lack financial security and the stress/shame that comes with that. While I am now in a much more secure place in my practice, it took a long time to get here and it’s been a rough, imperfect journey. I wouldn’t trade my battle scars for the world though, because they’ve made me the businessman I am today and have taught me numerous valuable lessons. I’m a life-long learner and will always embrace that attitude and willingness to grow/overcome.
