Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Castillo.
Hi Danielle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am the owner of Healing Chapter Counseling PLLC, and an LPC Associate under the supervision of April West, LPCS. I was born and raised here in San Antonio. Counseling is a second career for me, and I am glad I went down this path. At the peak of COVID, I decided to return to school to earn a Master’s in Forensic Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. After I graduated, I decided I didn’t want to work with friends; I wanted to work with women. I worked for a small practice, where I learned a lot about myself and the kind of counselor I wanted to be. At the beginning of this year, I made the leap into starting my own practice and have not looked back since. I am also a PhD student in a Counseling Education and Supervision program at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, where I will be able to give back to the next generation of counselors.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but I think I’m grateful for that as I’ve learned who I am not just as a professional but as a person. I was a Master ‘s-level Forensic Psychology student at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology during the height of COVID, after being out of school for over a decade. There was a time when I had a mentor drop out at the last minute, and I had to go find another within a couple of weeks, which could have sidelined me, but didn’t. There are so many other hurdles I’ve had to overcome, but each has happened for a reason, so I can say now that these struggles have gotten me to a stronger place.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Healing Chapter Counseling PLLC?
I am the owner of Healing Chapter Counseling PLLC. We offer Counseling and Life Coaching services to the BIPOC and minority communities. I think what sets me apart is that I believe everyone should have access to Mental Health Services, which is why I go out of my way to make sure that if I’m not the best fit, I help find someone who can be. At the same time, I understand that insurance or money can be a luxury, so I have ensured I can take low-income clients on a sliding scale that is not based solely on income but on genuine need. I pride myself on the fact that I believe the brand reflects my values in supporting the LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, and migrant communities. I’m really proud that, even if they don’t come to see me for therapy, I have made sure there are resources that they can take with them.
Healing Chapter Counseling PLLC works with both children and adults, offering individual and group therapy. I help clients who are struggling with not just anxiety or depression, but also suicidal thoughts, abuse, or trauma. For some, counseling is new, so I offer free consult calls to take the pressure off.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
When it comes to networking, for any aspiring counselors, it’s all about talking to people and asking questions. I was always so scared to reach out to others, but I found that the community itself encouraged me to start my own practice and believed in me, showing that it was something I was capable of doing. At the same time, when finding a mentor, I believe in trusting your instincts, and you will find someone who will encourage you and help push you beyond your boundaries so you can grow. It might be uncomfortable, but it is 100% worth it.
