Today we’d like to introduce you to Danae & Daena Arre.
Hi Danae & Daena, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, we’re Danae and Daena Arre 23-year-old twin sisters and owners of Breezy Winds Cakery. We are self-taught cake and cookie artists from a small strawberry town and proud to be the first established custom cake and cookie shop in our county. It all started at the age of 14, we graduated high school early and went straight to college full time.
It’s two of us attending college so we knew we had to help our parents and make money somehow and knew it was almost impossible to be a full-time pre-med student with a 9-5 job. That is when we discovered our hidden talent CAKE and COOKIES, but not just any cake and cookies. We put our creativity to a test, started making CUSTOM cakes, cookies, cupcakes for close friends and family and suddenly word of mouth grew our clientele because what we offered was unique.
Now, if you’re wondering how we came up with our business name “Breezy Winds Cakery”, let us tell you. Years before we starting baking, our mother had a dream and saw this name on a big storefront window “Breezy Winds” and once we entered the baking world we remembered the dream and knew it had a meaning so my sister and I added “Cakery” at the end and Breezy Winds Cakery just felt right, as if it was always meant to be.
So, we created a Facebook page started sharing our work on it, and mind you, we weren’t the greatest but we were learning as we went. The journey wasn’t easy, no one taught us, it was a bunch of TRIAL & ERROR. We even had grown adults comment under our post and make fun of our work but we didn’t let that stop us, we used it as fuel and motivation. Fast forward, 3 years later my sister and I saved every penny we earned from our sells and purchased our very own mini building at 18 all on our own, we didn’t have land to put it on so thankfully without thinking or expecting it, our grandmother gave us a piece of property that we built on.
It was just a shell building no electricity inside, no walls up, no water, nothing. We transformed it to what it is today, we’d contract people and they would take our money leaving us with half-done jobs. Let me just say; my sister and I put blood, sweat, and tears into our building. Our shop is our BABY. When we finally did a grand opening in the year 2020 the beginning few months did wonderfully, we were featured on a few other articles and one of our custom Ramen cakes made it on San Antonio Express-News.
Then, COVID hit and caused us to slow down and because of lockdown it suddenly brought out all the “home hobby bakers”. But thankfully we have clientele who’ve watched us grow from the beginning that continues to support us, all of the support doesn’t go unnoticed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not going to lie, you will face many hardships in building a business. COVID-19 was an obstacle that many small businesses faced and only a few were able to stay afloat. We’re very grateful and thankful to be standing still. Owning a business is definitely not for the weak and most definitely not for everyone.
Being business-minded is a gift and if it’s in you, then it’s in you. Watching your business grow from the bottom up is the most rewarding part of it all, a feeling that’s indescribable! We inspire many and have been told plenty of times. My sister and I have always said and hope to one day write a book to help and motivate young entrepreneurs like ourselves because we know how it is to be scared to start and make a move.
We’re beyond blessed and wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for God. When you put Him first, everything else will fall into place.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Everything we do, we do with the best quality ingredients. We create edible art; custom cakes, custom cookies, cupcakes, etc. for all occasions!
