Today we’d like to introduce you to Damian Di Lisio
Hi Damian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first fell in love with graphic design during my senior year of high school after choosing it as an elective. Until then, I had always created art but wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it. I first attended Cypress Community College in California where I grew up, then transferred to California State University, Fullerton where I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts. After graduation, I landed the job of my dreams at a design boutique called CORE Creative in Culver City doing entertainment design for clients like HBO, Warner Brothers, Disney, Paramount, Amazon, etc. However, this was short-lived as my mental health reached an all-time low. I felt lost and stressed daily, not exactly knowing why. I quit my job and moved to Arizona where I lived with my cousin. This was the loneliest I had ever been in my life, I had no job, and no friends. I soon landed a remote design job based in Austin where I met some of the most amazing, kindest artists of my life. I moved to San Antonio after living in Arizona for a year and quickly fell in love with the people and the culture of this city. I am constantly inspired and have been making artwork like never before. I feel I have finally found what brings me joy and that is art, and connecting with the community. I am currently on my way to start selling my artwork and hopefully freelancing for local businesses!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth. I have dealt with depression and anxiety my whole life along with severe insecurities. I never believed anyone would like my art let alone buy something I have made but through the support of my friends, family, and loved ones, I never stopped pushing myself. I’m at a place now where I feel confident in my art, although I still struggle, it’s nothing near what I used to feel and I’m more determined than ever.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in graphic design leaning more on the illustrative side creating mostly stickers, posters, prints, and logos. Currently, I am known for the illustrations and designs I create inspired by this city and the beautiful state of Texas. Some of my work includes stickers highlighting notable areas of San Antonio such as Market Square and the Pearl, illustrations of popular HEB products, and Whataburger prints. I am currently most proud of the consistent dedication I have been putting into my work, I know it may sound cheesy, but the hardest part about getting your art noticed is being consistent. As for what sets me apart, I feel my stubbornness to never give up is the major one (or maybe it’s the Taurus in me).
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Covid-19 taught me that nothing in life is predictable so there is no point worrying about the future. Easier said than done of course, but in a matter of weeks the entire world changed and will never be the same as it was before. A bit dramatic, I know… but true. If you don’t embrace it time will leave you behind.
