Meet Chris Purcell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Purcell.

Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Born May of 1981, (Taurus) From as far back as I can remember, my father had me singing, dancing & playing music in anything he could get me into. In a strange turn of events, we ended up in a community just outside of Eureka Springs, AK where I was involved in a large-scale music video production for Christian music artist John Michael Talbot. I believe I was 9 or 10 and the year was 1989 or 90. From then, I was hooked on music & video production. Along the way I have been fortunate enough to rub elbows, work with or be classmates with some amazing people a couple being President Bill Clinton, Jarred Padalecki (Supernatural) who I had theater with all through high school, and almost too many bands to name from multiple genres, mostly Rock and Country acts. Papa Roach, Tantric, Thompson Square, Rhett Thomas, and Mark Chestnutt to name a few.

My band (ALL STORIES END) was formed in 2005 and was a high-energy garage band for many a year until taking the step in 2015 to record our first legit full-length album titled THE ARCHITECTURE OF SOUND. Originally I was just a guitarist who did harmonies and backup vocals but after going through a couple of singers we all agreed that I should just be the lead and our other guitarist Matthew Calvillo would assume the role of backups and harmonies. Things started rolling in a much more productive fashion after we made the change.

I’ve lived in a lot of places in the US over the years and I can honestly say San Antonio has a thriving musical community full of talented players and good souls. Everywhere else I’ve lived just didn’t have the amount of bands, players, or talent so readily available. Quite the underground scene here! I’ve always longed to return when living elsewhere purely because of the musical opportunities available and amount of good musicians to play with.

As of right now, I’ve been teaching music for about a decade on the side, which I absolutely love! I am able to help cultivate future talent and it in turn teaches me and affords me great opportunities. I have picked up instruments I never thought I would play. Currently, I teach and play guitar, bass, drum kit, banjo, ukelele, voice, piano.

The band is comprised of myself as the principal songwriter, lead vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist, Matthew Calvillo: guitar, harmonies & backup vocals, Moody: bass, & David Galvan: drums. We’ve held this lineup basically since 2015 with Moody being the newest member, but definitely a most welcome addition as he has really helped to elevate the music and bring the bass out from behind the bombastic guitars.

Currently, we have just released the first two singles/videos from our upcoming EP titled PARADISUM. The first titled FURIOUS is a song that reflects on being locked up at home during the pandemic but in a soul-searching tone & the second is titled TAURUS which is a more aggressive song we literally just dropped about a week ago. In a nutshell, it is about the patience of a Taurus being worn thin. The EP is scheduled for release mid-summer, probably 3rd or 4th week of July, and we are planning tour dates all around it for the summer. You can find our work in all digital outlets now.

The band itself operates on a few standards of practice, we tell stories in our songs and videos (hence the name ALL STORIES END), we love harmonies, it has to have good or high energy, it most certainly cannot be fake, everything we write about comes from a place of truth or a greater understanding of truth. Lastly, we love a variety of styles of music and love the idea of intertwining elements of different genres into our modern rock sound.

Although I’m sure there are so many things I could expound upon, this is more or less how we ended up here.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The music business is a challenge all by itself, just learning to bend and morph into an ever-changing landscape can be tiresome. Finding ways to stay profitable, etc. On the lighter side there’s been stolen gear, trailers stuck in parking garages, injuries, you name it lol. In retrospect, a lot of the challenges make for funny stories later and are probably some of my favorite memories!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Our music is probably best known for its dual guitar, harmony heavy approach. Also, I’ve heard people say they really like our crisp clean vocals (also loaded with harmony). We are probably most proud of our live show due to not only the musical performance but also to a large degree the highly physical component to our show. You’d be hard-pressed to find a technical band such as ourselves, moving around, dancing, jumping, and/or hitting their knees during a show!

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Books: 1984 by Orwell, The Prince by Machiavelli, anything Conan by Robert E. Howard

Podcasts: Joe Rogan, Breaking Points, Rick Beato, and so many more…

Pretty much all college radio stations I can get apps for or find on existing ones because I draw a lot of my inspiration from non-mainstream sources these days. I love world music and finding new original sounds.
