Meet Bobby Rivas Bridgette Norris Sanchez of Southside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Rivas Bridgette Norris Sanchez.

Hi Bobby Rivas, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Bridgette and I (Bobby) met in 2017. We had common passions for the arts, culture and social causes. We quickly became a couple. I was actively playing in bands and working on a music career. She was a uniquely talented singer but had never really pursued getting on stage.

Fast forward to 2019 and I’m touring with San Antonio punk band, Fea. Bridge comes along to work as the tour manager. She experienced the ups and downs of gigging with a band. Literally the night we got home, she told me she wanted to form our own band.

We began as a duo. We had more variety than identity at that point, doing what were essentially glorified karaoke performances with a laptop. There were lot’s of covers at first but our original music becoming more featured as we found our stride as a songwriting team.

Booking were becoming more frequent and we were starting to build a more interesting show when the pandemic hit. Like everyone, we had a lot of time to think and overthink who we were and what we were doing. As the world opened back up, we came out as a 4 piece rock band, reinterpreting a lot of the material we had with more energy and personality.

That incarnation of the band made a full-length record in 2023 call “Be Cool”. (Like from Pulp Fiction… ‘Be cool honey bunny’… hehe) Since then, we’ve played a lot and continued to evolve. We’re currently playing a lot of one-offs and short runs of shows while working on our second record.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While we love doing what we do, there are plenty of obstacles. The biggest one is balancing the work of running the band while still doing other work to make a living. Bridgette is a cake decorator and I am a guitar teacher, amongst other musical odd jobs. It can be tough to preserve the energy and money it takes to seriously do music.

There’s also the challenge of balancing the dynamics of our on-stage and off-stage relationship. While we’ve gotten better at it over the last few years, it can be tricky to constantly switch hats in synchronicity.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We call our style of music ‘Party Punk’. To us, punk is a mentality more than a musical aesthetic. We pull from disco, new wave, ska, hip hop, really a vast landscape of musical influences. That’s the modus operandi we’ve always agreed on. I think we’re best known for making music that is fun and energetic but also digs deep and doesn’t shy away from complex feelings. We are always inspired to be entertainers, but sometimes the clown is sad, or angry, or confused.

We’re proud of the music we’ve made and the people we’ve reached with it. We love the first record we made and we’re proud to feel ourselves evolving into who we are on this new batch of songs.

I think what sets us apart is our flexibility. Like I said, our style is very eclectic. But also literally. We do some crazy moves on stage.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We always are happy to connect with anyone who digs our music. Of course people do the conventional things, buy or stream our music, come to a show, buy some merch, follow our socials. However, meeting the people we’ve met along the way is what’s been so energizing and inspiring
