Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Garza
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I purchased my first camera in May of 2023. At that time, my partner and I just had recently found out we were expecting our first child. I always knew I wanted to be that mom who captured every single milestone so I went out and purchased the most budget and beginner friendly camera I can find, the Canon Rebel T7.
Shortly after purchasing the Rebel T7 and attempting to earn the necessary knowledge to understand the functionality and how the camera operates, I became quite discouraged because it felt overwhelming at that time, so I put it back in the box in June of 2023. After extensive research and searching for my own personal maternity photographer, I discovered a void in the San Antonio photography market, specifically indoor studio photography: a lack of photographers dedicated to empowering women, fostering confidence, and creating a space where women could feel comfortable embracing all facets of themselves, from their deepest insecurities to their most cherished triumphs without any judgement.
My first photoshoot, that was not my family, was actually an outdoor shoot in February 2024 so I am fairly new to the photography industry. After my first photoshoot, I immediately decided I would buy a professional camera and provide photography services to the public as a business, which I ended up naming the business after our daughter, Skyzlyn Rae Photography. I am coming up on a year on Valentine’s Day of 2025.
As a way to connect with potential clients and build my portfolio, I began by offering free photo shoots in my 400 sqft home garage with 2 unreliable portable a/c units to women and their small families followed by their peers. To continue to gain valuable experience and expand my reach, I then began to barter my photography services with other small women owned businesses taking into consideration their social media presence. This mutually beneficial arrangement allowed me to hone my skills and build my portfolio without charging but still receiving services I needed, while simultaneously increasing my visibility which allowed me to get my first studio in June of 2024. This strategy proved successful for my business personally, enabling me to transition photography into my full-time career while maintaining my Residential Appraisal services.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
With no family located in San Antonio, other than my partner and I plus a newborn (born in November 2023), two dogs, and recovering from a c-section it has certainly been challenging to find a balance while attempting to build a business, learn necessary techniques and editing programs to provide remarkable photography services that I envisioned for my business.. Till this day (January of 2025), I am still struggling to find a balance as I spend most days watching our daughter during the day and working at nights.
We’ve been impressed with Skyzlyn Rae Photography, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Skyzlyn Rae Photography is a woman owned business that provides photography services in San Antonio and the surrounding areas. We specialize mainly in studio photography, but are able and willing to provide outdoor sessions upon request.
Photography sessions we offer include Birthday’s, Branding, Couples, Graduation, Maternity/Newborn Fresh 48/Newborn Lifestyle, Headshots, and events (excluding weddings). Birthday photoshoot sessions are the most frequently booked sessions at our studio, specifically a birthday photoshoot with the spotlight style vibe. Our signature “Spotlight” sessions are highly sought-after, known for their personalized approach that captures each client’s unique style and delivers authentic, organic results.
We’re not your average studio photographers. We embrace individuality and understand that everyone has a unique vision of themselves. If you desire specific enhancements, such as subtle touch-ups or more dramatic edits, we’ll work closely with you to achieve your desired look. Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I firmly believe in the principle of ‘getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.’ I’ve found that embracing risk is the cornerstone of growth, not only in my personal life but also in my journey as a business owner. I believe that pushing beyond comfort zones is essential for achieving significant progress and elevating my business to new heights.
I acknowledge that setbacks are inevitable, so my focus shifts from ‘if’ I’ll encounter challenges to ‘when’ they arise and how I will effectively navigate them. I believe that these challenges present valuable learning opportunities and are essential for personal and professional growth.
I would be more inclined to trust and engage with a business/person who openly acknowledges having made mistakes in the past, compared to one who claims to have never erred. Past missteps, when addressed and learned from, often demonstrate resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to grow, qualities I highly value in a business/person.
Risk-taking is an inherent and indispensable component of business growth.
