Today we’d like to introduce you to Albert And Casey.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My husband Albert and I opened Gruene Tea Haus after realizing our community did not have a dedicated space for tea lovers to gather, learn, and slow down for a while. Both of us come from teaching backgrounds, and we have always loved the experience of learning about different cultures, traveling, and visiting local tea shops everywhere we went. In September 2023, we visited a tea shop in Colorado that really inspired us.
What started as a simple idea quickly turned into a passion project. We wanted to create more than just a tea shop. We wanted to build a welcoming space where people could connect with friends, hold meetings, read a book, play a board game, or simply enjoy a quality cup of tea in a relaxing environment. We focus on artisanal loose leaf teas with no artificial flavoring, and we love helping people discover how different and approachable real tea can be.
Since opening, we have continued growing through tea education classes, community events, custom blends, baked goods made in house, and creating experiences that encourage people to slow down and be present. Watching customers turn into regulars and seeing the shop become part of people’s routines has been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any small business, it definitely has not been a completely smooth road. Opening a business comes with a steep learning curve, especially when you are building something from the ground up. There are always challenges behind the scenes that customers do not necessarily see, from balancing inventory and finances to learning how to market ourselves and manage the day to day operations of a growing business.
One of the biggest challenges has been educating people about loose leaf tea. Many people are familiar with tea bags but have never experienced high quality loose leaf tea, so a large part of what we do is helping customers understand the differences and making tea feel approachable rather than intimidating. We have had to be patient and intentional in creating an environment where people feel comfortable asking questions and trying something new.
Despite the challenges, every obstacle has helped us grow. Seeing customers become regulars, hearing how much they enjoy the atmosphere, and watching the community embrace what we are building has made all the hard work worth it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Gruene Tea Haus, we specialize in artisanal loose leaf teas that are made with natural ingredients and no artificial flavoring. We offer a wide variety of teas from around the world, along with custom blends, tea infused baked goods, cold brews, and tea education experiences. Our goal has always been to create a space where people can slow down, connect, and experience tea in a more meaningful way.
What makes us unique is that education is at the heart of everything we do. Both Albert and I come from teaching backgrounds. Albert still teaches high school virtually, and I currently homeschool, so helping people learn naturally carries into the way we run the shop. We love introducing customers to different tea categories, brewing methods, tea cultures, and the stories behind the teas we serve. We try to make tea approachable and welcoming whether someone is completely new to loose leaf tea or already deeply passionate about it.
I think we are also known for the atmosphere we have created. We wanted the shop to feel relaxing, inviting, and community focused rather than rushed. Customers come in to meet friends, work remotely, read books, play board games, or simply take a quiet moment for themselves. Building a place where people genuinely feel comfortable and connected has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
What I am most proud of is seeing how the community has embraced what we have built. Watching customers become regulars, seeing friendships form in the shop, and hearing people say the space feels peaceful or restorative means a lot to us. We are proud that Gruene Tea Haus has become more than just a tea shop. It has become a gathering place and an experience that people truly connect with.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One thing that might surprise people is how personal the business is to us. The baked goods are recipes I make myself, several of our blends were created by Albert through a lot of trial and error, and so much of the atmosphere and experience in the shop reflects the kind of place we personally wanted to exist in our community.
Another thing people may not realize is how much research and intentionality goes into every tea we carry. We spend a lot of time learning about tea origins, processing methods, brewing techniques, and tea culture from around the world. For us, tea is not just a drink. It is history, craftsmanship, agriculture, culture, and community all wrapped into one experience.
