Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Hill
Hi Adam, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Of course, thanks for having me. I come from a military family—both of my grandfathers served in WWII, helping liberate France, and also spent time in Korea and Vietnam with the Army. They each met their future wives while overseas in Europe, so I was raised to really love and appreciate America. My dad also retired from the Air Force. After traveling the world as a C-17 pilot alongside the greatest people I’ve ever met, I came up with what would become Crewdogs in the summer of 2020—a way to help the military community while traveling.
What started as a website for military members to share advice on where to live and why has since evolved into a fully integrated web platform, including both a website and a mobile application for sharing homes, rooms, and spaces within a trusted network. Also known as military city USA, San Antonio is the perfect area to help connect those looking for a place, with those who have space to host.
While serving on active duty in the Air Force from 2020 to 2023, we developed various versions of Crewdogs for online use. In the fall of 2023, we launched our mobile application, which experienced over 16,000+ downloads in just under 90 days by Veterans and military worldwide. Together with another veteran and former San Angelo resident, Tony Romeo, we began a 1.5-year roadmap of extensive technical developments to help the community better host each other.
We are now excited to release the newest version of Crewdogs for worldwide travel but especially the San Antonio community, which will feature thousands of Airbnb listings available for booking directly through Crewdogs with a military discount. Most importantly, these bookings will generate thousands of dollars in donations for our veteran non-profit partners—many with a strong presence in San Antonio like Fisher House Foundation and Five and Thrive.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Any entrepreneur who tells you it’s smooth sailing would be lying. It often requires working multiple jobs at all hours of the day. In the early days, balancing my role as an active-duty aviator in a special operations squadron, managing home life, and building a tech startup was incredibly challenging. It meant long nights and early mornings.
The hardest challenges were time and knowledge. My time was limited, and I had little idea of what problem to solve or product to create. I understood the power of the military community and the struggles we face, but it took time to fully grasp how we could best support each other. Along the way, global events constantly reshaped our priorities.
One such hardship came in the fall of 2021. While in the final testing phase of a new website version, I was suddenly deployed to the Middle East to take part in Operation Allied Refuge. Over 30+ days, I assisted in the evacuation of American citizens and Afghans from Kabul, Afghanistan. After each landing back at our operating base, I would continue testing and development during my crew rest period—only to turn around and conduct more flights after a 12-hour break.
The people around Crewdogs—my wife and children, along with our founding team kept us charging ahead.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Crewdogs?
Crewdogs is an online community marketplace founded by veterans for fellow veterans, service members, family members, and patriots to host a variety of accommodations through our mobile app and website. From vacation rentals to spare rooms, Crewdogs prioritizes trust and transparency by utilizing ID.me military verification for every guest, ensuring hosts have peace of mind. Our discounted fee structure let’s you offer a military discount and participate in our Veteran Foundation Give-Back Campaign while welcoming a new category of 25M+ travelers—whether for vacations or official government travel.
When you book on Crewdogs – it’s supporting not just another member from the military community, but their selected cause. On each eligible host listing, you’ll see this cause along with the mission statement. These causes include the Fisher House Foundation, Gary Sinise Foundation, Fold of Honor, and Stop Soldier Suicide.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is about helping and connecting those who support and defend this country, specifically within the San Antonio military community. With so much traffic to the area for military schooling, basic training, conferences, or simply a vacation trip to the River Walk – it means connecting a trustworthy network. It’s about fostering relationships that might not have happened otherwise and creating solutions for travel problems. It also means giving back to veteran foundations that do so much for the military community, like our San Antonio focused foundations. We want to ensure that the next generation of service members and their families inherit a better world than the one we grew up in, and help grow the vibrant military community in San Antonio.
