Life & Work with The Recasts

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Recasts.

The Recasts

Hello, The Recasts; please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Mando: I started The Recasts when I was still in the military. I would support the local music scene when I was on active duty and had always wanted to create a band. I almost did not return from my last deployment in 2011 and decided I may not have the chance again, so I needed to start the band and go for it. I wanted us to be a change from the scene, be about helping others, and really make everything about those who come out to shows. So, we embarked on our journey and have helped animal shelters, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and more. We wanted to write songs for the listeners and inspire others to do great things. We’ve done our best to keep this in mind through it all. Whenever someone tells us we inspired them or they’re alive because one of our songs was their lifeline, it’s a special thing you’ll always have in life. There’s a responsibility there that we are grateful to own.

Phantom: Around 2007, the game Guitar Hero came out. At some point, I got so good at the game that one day, I thought to myself, “This can’t be that hard to do in real life!” sounding the cockiest just because I had the coordination for a video game. My sister had always held onto a couple of guitars that my mom used to own and an amp that was mostly collecting dust, as she had gotten a beautiful blue acoustic guitar that she spent more time with. I asked her one day if I could use one of the guitars and the amp, and she said yes. The rest, for the most part, is a blur of noise and aggravation. My sole motivation was to prove that playing certain songs was easier than they sounded. Not surprisingly, I was wrong at every turn. I started figuring out that so many different playing styles varied between bands. While some shared sound similarities with guitar tunings, the styles were so different, which fascinated me the most. I started playing with my first bassist around 2008 when I purchased my first guitar. A piece broke on my mom’s guitar, and I needed to be more savvy in repairing it. We, the bassist and I, made a couple of songs together, then, over time, grew apart, but the music flow never stopped between us. In 2012, I met my second bassist, and we continued to make about an album worth of music. He joined The Recasts first; they needed a guitarist at some point. I auditioned and have been here ever since.

Mike: I grew up on rock & metal music early. I played rhythm guitar but could have done better at it. Once I picked up a bass, I fell in love with it. I always liked the bass-playing style of Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead. As far as tone goes, I always favored the tone of Sean Yseult of White Zombie. I played in several bands, both original and covers. I once auditioned for The Recasts a few years ago, but the timing in my life was just off. The stars aligned in the summer of 2023, as I joined in, and we’ve been off to the races since.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The challenges we have encountered, there are many, are what we were meant to encounter to become who we are today. We have embraced those, knowing we would be better at the end of the day. We’ve lost band members some key family members, had gear go out, stuff stolen, had some bad business deals, and so on, but we learned from each one. But we keep our purpose of being a Recast in mind.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We specialize in making music and entertaining those willing to see us perform live. We are most proud of being there for people. Any message we can be there, we always do our best to give you the best experience possible.

What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Whatever happens, The Recasts will still be there. Since 2011, we have changed and adapted to what has changed in the music industry.
