Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Royer. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Robert Royer, Founder/President of Building Brands Marketing, hasn’t always been in the marketing consulting space but is familiar with adversity. Royer started his career primarily in restaurant management until he began his first media position at 25. From his father passing away at an early to early parenthood as a 22-year-old, Royer had many odds stacked against him that many might assume would limit his ceiling. From a teenager, Royer thrived in leadership roles and had a knack for being a strong communicator who transitioned into a strong leader. Over the past decade, Royer has cemented his reputation in the media and marketing industry by working on hundreds of marketing strategies for all sizes of businesses. While he started his media career as a rising star and standout in the newspaper industry, being selected as 1 of 8 nationwide for the annual NEXGEN program by the Southern Newspapers Publishers Association, Royer eventually transitioned into the marketing agency industry and left media. Over the last decade, Royer has worked with several household regional names. Residing in Victoria, whose population is 65,534 people, many would assume it would be a challenging geographic location to launch a marketing agency with over 25 current employees successfully. Royer has built a reputation around the South Texas community as one of the strongest marketing strategists. Royer says, “I would credit our success in building the largest marketing agency in the Crossroads to God leading me toward bright people who shared the same vision and passion for what they do as I have. I didn’t know some of this talent existed in our region. As our business has grown, I have been fortunate to meet many new talented people who we have added to the company that shares the commonality of creating work we can look back on decades and be proud of.”
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Royer’s career has been no stranger to obstacles. Growing up in a single-parent household without a father after he passed away, with a mother who never re-married, Royer alludes to having difficulty finding his pathway growing up. He began associating himself with the wrong crowd, leading to a series of legal issues throughout his teenage years. While he successfully left these challenges behind him in his early twenties, he almost immediately was thrust into early parenthood with a young family as the primary provider. Royer says this is where he began to focus more intentionally on his education. In December 2014, Royer completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from the University of Houston-Victoria after years of working full-time and attending school. He then became a manager in his first media role at 26 years old, managing individuals who were sometimes decades older than him. This caused him to truly hone in on becoming a master of his craft to gain the trust of his employees while continuously furthering his education outside of work through research, third-party leadership programs, and independent courses such as Google’s Skillshop Academy. Through his dedication and hard work to become an expert at what he did, Royer built a pipeline of trusted clients who began putting the growth of their livelihood in his and his organization’s hands.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Royer states, “While my specialization has always been in strategic business analysis, budgeting, and marketing channel analysis, I hope to leave a footprint in this world knowing I was able to pass this skillset on to others while also significantly impacting the livelihood of small business owners.” Royer truly takes what he does personally and builds a personal connection with many businesses he works with. He mentions that his organization’s clients become an extension of his family and part of his story. Royer says, “One of my favorite brands to have worked with in my career is Ventura’s Tamales. They are a restaurant in Victoria that gave me a chance, and I saw the potential in my skillset years ago. They allowed me to create freedom, and I have produced some work I am very proud of. Ventura’s is a part of my story, and I am a part of their story. Two of the owners’ sisters have become like mother figures to me. Today, I am privileged to still be the voice of Ventura’s Tamales in all their marketing.”
What matters most to you? Why?
“What matters most to me in my work is that I’m leaving a legacy behind me. While I could be a CMO or Marketing Director of some organization instead of operating BBM, I don’t feel I can make the same impact in that role. The people I am surrounded by at Building Brands Marketing are the most intelligent and passionate people I have ever worked around. By collaborating with them, I truly believe we are much more capable of leaving a lasting impact in this world,” Royer states. Royer also mentions the most important thing to him is his family. Royer says, “I am extremely thankful for my wife is everything I am not creatively. She has been pivotal to my ability to focus my efforts where needed for our family’s future.”
