Life & Work with Queen Griffin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Queen Griffin.

Hi Queen Griffin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey started in 1996 when my family and I took a road trip to California. We went to the swap meet in LA where we came upon a gentleman who resembled the character Goro from Mortal Combat. This same man installed my dad’s first set of locs. My father was a musician who played all genres of music. His locs quickly became a part of his signature and sparked my love for locs and my desire to know all there is to know about them. I would get my hair braided so I could look like him and mimic the way he would swing his locs from side to side while playing. This was a pivotal point in my life because I would see how my father was looked at by people of different races, sometimes, it would even be people that looked like us who made the negative comments about his hair. By today’s standards, my dad was semi-freeform, which means he only maintained his hair maybe twice a year so people would always ask him ” When are you gonna get your hair done?” his response would always be “yall worried about the wrong thing” which would usually cut the conversation short.

This taught me a very important lesson about self-confidence as I went through my own struggles of womanhood. Here at Loc’d Tight LLC our mission is to promote hair positivity and provide spiritual healing through the locs. As black people, we have been indoctrinated with European beauty standards. This makes us do unthinkable things to our hair as well as our children’s hair. It can make us feel inadequate when our hair isn’t “done” or in a state we feel is not acceptable. We are always trying to make our blackness palatable to other races or in the workplace. While I was in the corporate world I had so many anxieties about my hair. Being the only black person/woman in the entire office I automatically stood out and felt like most of us do in that environment, singled out. My hair would often become the topic of uncomfortable discussions. The pandemic was a blessing in disguise as it forced me into full-time entrepreneurship. Giving me the opportunity to create the place to help free us from this thinking. In order to get past the hair trauma, our community has passed down from generation to generation. I’m intentional about helping my clients build positive self dialog when it comes to the topic of hair.

Since 2017 Loc’d Tight LLC has been dedicated to this mission. Providing loc maintenance, repair services as well as extension services. Building within the black community has been the most rewarding and fulfilling experience. The support we have received from our community has been overwhelming. With over 350 clients, our Loc’d Tight Family can be seen everywhere from Cibolo to Sea World.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has actually been pretty smooth, which is how I know that I’m finally walking in my purpose. With great support from my husband and family, there is nothing I cant do. I truly love what I do so I don’t consider it work. It’s a chance to connect with my people and create a safe and positive hair experience for them.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Loc’d Tight LLC, we provide loc education, loc maintenance, spiritual healing, and great vibes. I specialize in Loc repair and providing remedies for loc issues. I am most known for the intentional energy and the positive vibes I provide to my clients. I always say, yes I do hair but what I do here at Loc’d Tight is so much more than just hair. My clients leave my chair feeling renewed. I am not your average loctician/stylist, meaning I do things a lot differently. First is my Whole Loc Maintenance Technique. I do not cut corners and just focus on the new growth. I maintenance the loc from root to end. The second is my scheduling system. I am a one-on-one service provider. I only take 4-5 clients a day so I can give each client all the attention they deserve and focus on them from start to finish. lastly, my transparency, I tell my clients the truth about the condition of their hair and how we can fix it. If we can’t fix it I’m honest with them about ending their loc journey. All processes are a collaborative effort between me and my clients in order to achieve my client’s true loc goals.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My family deserves all the credit. They allow me to live in my purpose which means some long nights and take out for dinner. My husband is my biggest supporter and goes above and beyond to help make my life easier. His support has empowered me to follow my dreams all while still being a mother and a wife.

I owe it all to my amazing and loyal clients. Their trust has given me the ability to change my life and I am forever grateful.
