Life & Work with Monic Reyes of San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monic Reyes.

Monic, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It is wonderful to connect with you and your readers again! As a self-taught contemporary abstract artist born and raised in San Antonio, my creative journey originally began in the fashion world, co-designing alongside my mother for her label, Malen Reyes Couture. My path shifted in 2015 when I picked up a paintbrush to create a canvas piece for my mother’s home, which instantly sparked my passion for painting and pushed me to pursue fine art professionally. Today, through continuous experimentation with dynamic textures, acrylics, and color palettes, I have had the privilege of sharing my abstract work in national galleries and international publications, constantly striving to connect with viewers through genuine emotion and expression.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—my journey has been a long one filled with natural ups and downs, much like any creative career. In the beginning, transitioning from fashion design to fine art meant navigating the steep learning curve of building an abstract style from scratch and finding my distinct voice. Balancing the business side of being an independent artist alongside creative block and self-doubt has certainly brought its challenges, but having my mother’s continuous support and love has truly helped guide me through every step of the way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in contemporary fine art abstract paintings, primarily using acrylic on canvas while integrating modeling paste and textiles like fabric to build rich, tactile dimension. I am best known for my textural elements and highly dynamic compositions. What sets my art apart is my key objective: transferring my spontaneous inspiration into an authentic emotional connection that allows viewers to discover their own deep meaning within each piece. Above all, I am most proud of seeing my work resonate with people across the globe and transform their physical spaces with meaningful, expressive energy.

How do you think about happiness?
What brings me true happiness is my family and the deep connection and passion we share through art—being able to create, inspire, and grow together means everything to me. Outside of my studio practice, I find great joy in quiet, slow days spent appreciating the simple things, whether that’s savoring a warm cup of coffee, getting lost in a good book, clearing my mind with a great workout, or grounding myself in nature during peaceful walks. These balanced moments nourish my soul and keep me connected to what truly matters, which in turn feeds back into my life, my relationships, and my creative spirit.
