Life & Work with Marleni Garza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marleni Garza.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My parents are from Laredo and both came to SA with their families. Their love story is beautiful and sad but out of that, I came. They had me at a very young age, and for my family, my birth was a blessing in more ways than one. When I turned 2, a month later, my daddy earned his angel wings and my life without him began. I have lived my life filled with family and love and surrounded by support from those whom I love.

So, in December of 2019, I decided to go and take a “cookie decorating” class with my grama for fun. That is where it all started for me. We brought our decorated cookies home, shared some laughs about how we did, and decided we would experiment with making and decorating our own. My mom joined in on the fun and from there it just took off. I began baking, perfecting my recipes, working on my designs and technique.

My grama allowed me to basically destroy her kitchen with supplies and baking goods on a daily basis as I made my way through the following months. Finally, I decided that I was ready to start my own small business. I am Marleni’s Boujee Bakery. My logo is a heron, which represents my last name, Garza. It’s my brand, it is my family and what my Legacy will be.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing about baking has been easy but it has been so fun. I have been building and growing along the way, it is all about the learning process. Sometimes, I struggle with self-doubt, and it takes a huge toll on my mental health. I always try to remind myself to not be close-minded, to not be afraid to try new designs and techniques.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in custom Boujee treats, specifically decorated royal icing cookies. I love turning your cookie dreams into reality! I often get asked, “Do they taste as good as they look?” and the answer is YES. I strive to give my clients not only beautiful designs but delicious tasting cookies. My most popular flavor is my vanilla almond sugar cookie.

Marleni’s Boujee Bakery is most known for making custom orders for any occasion such as birthdays, baby showers, weddings, etc. In addition to that, I also occasionally do presales and pop-ups. I am most proud of my discovered talent for art, something my daddy happened to be very good at. I must get it from him!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned is to not give up on something you love! Family support is vital for the success of any small business. Their wisdom on business and adulting has been instrumental to my current success.

The most important key is to believe in your journey and be proud of all you accomplish. Keep looking forward and continue the path of growth and education within your passion!
