Today we’d like to introduce you to Manny Vega
Hi Manny, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved from Odessa, Texas to San Antonio nearly 20 years ago, always feeling a deep connection to the world of art. It seemed only natural to embrace the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in the realms of drag performance and male entertainment. Along the way, I discovered a passion for photography. It all started in 2015 when a friend gifted me a camera, and I instantly saw the creative potential it offered. I began taking photos of my partner and friends, and soon my approach evolved. I experimented with dramatic lighting and dedicated more time to perfecting my photo editing.
As I grew in my craft, I pushed myself to new heights. I’ve had the incredible opportunity to tour with Latrice Royale from *RuPaul’s Drag Race* and currently serve as the photographer for Piranha and Gypsy, two of the top gay bars in Las Vegas as well as The Iconic Rose room in Dallas TX, and of course the one and only Pegasus of San Antonio that was the first club to allow me to do their cast photos. Over the years, I’ve captured iconic entertainers across Texas and the country, and I’ve come to love every aspect of photography.
Along the way, I expanded my skills into video production, which led me to develop something innovative for our pageant community. That passion project became *Mr. & Miss Texas Forever*, a Texas-based competition where we film contestants for a few days, using that content for promotion and giving them more exposure beyond the brief stage time typical of traditional pageants. In just two years, our competition has become the largest in Texas, and we’re only getting bigger. The upcoming season of *Miss Texas* is sure to be incredible, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey hasn’t always been easy. There have been many times when I questioned my path, especially in a field like this where income can be unpredictable. With photography and video services, you never really know when the next opportunity will come, or when someone will need your work. There were days when I seriously doubted myself, struggling to pay bills and doing the best I could with what little I had. But through it all, I kept pushing forward, and today, I’m proud to say I’ve made it.
Now, I’m honored to be nominated for the second year in a row as Best Photographer, as well as Best Promoter for the Texas Forever system at the Brit Sis Awards, which will be held here in San Antonio.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a photographer and videographer with a passion for creating dramatic, statement-making images that push artistic boundaries. One of my proudest achievements has been the opportunity to work with incredible entertainers, including one of my all-time favorite Tejano artists, Stefani Montielwhich is the most nominated female artist this year at the Tejanom Music awards. Another milestone I’m especially grateful for was going on tour with the amazing Latrice Royale from *RuPaul’s Drag Race*. That experience profoundly changed my perspective on life and artistry.
What sets me apart from other photographers is my ability to connect with my clients on a deeper level. I believe in creating a relaxed, comfortable environment where people can truly be themselves. I know how awkward it can feel to be in front of a camera, so I work to put my clients at ease by making every session feel like a fun conversation between friends—just us in a room, laughing and capturing great moments.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Yes, One thing I’ve learned in life is that we only have one to live, so make it count. To those who are struggling to create or provide, don’t give up. Keep pushing toward your dreams and don’t hold back. The moment you hold back, you’re robbing yourself of the beautiful opportunities that could be lighting up your life. Keep moving forward, and let that sunshine in.
