Today we’d like to introduce you to Luci Carpenter
Hi Luci, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
“Luci could be a writer for Disney,” my English teacher said one day as I finished reading my passage from the journal prompt that day. Creative writing prompts were my favorite. It was an opportunity to let my mind run wild and escape into an alternate universe, even if only for a fifteen allotted minutes.
I have been a creative for as long as I can remember. My dream job went from fashion designer to interior designer to psychologist to teacher back to psychologist.
I eventually earned a B.S. in Marketing from North Carolina A&T State University (the #1 Public HBCU). I figured I could do anything I wanted, as long as I knew how to market it.
Now, I am in the process of writing my debut novel and could not be more excited to accomplish the career goal that never crossed my mind.
An author.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to entering a creative career is smooth, but it is a marathon not a sprint. I am currently a Marketing Coordinator and work in different disciplines such as corporate partnerships, event execution, content creation, modeling, acting, filming, editing, script writing. Becoming a well-rounded creative professional can be difficult, especially trying to split your time and learn different skills, but is rewarding.
More specifically, while writing my novel I’ve struggled with perfectionism. I have to remind myself that you can’t edit what you haven’t written. I have also struggled with prioritizing writing. I am a corporate creative and do freelance creative work as well. I have had to sacrifice my freelance projects to focus on my novel and it has been hard feeling like I am disappointing potential clients.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m most known for my content creation, which spans a wide range of topics—from college advice and writing novels to travel and relationships. This versatility has allowed me to connect with a diverse audience across different platforms. One of my proudest achievements is the work I’ve done with brands like Victoria’s Secret PINK, where I’ve been able to blend creativity with strategic marketing to deliver impactful results. My efforts have earned me multiple awards in recognition of my ability to drive engagement and deliver measurable results.
What sets me apart is my ability to merge storytelling across different mediums. While I initially honed my storytelling skills in photo and video content, I’ve now extended that craft into writing. For me, writing is just another form of content, and I’m currently channeling my passion for storytelling into a novel.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
How much time do we have?
My biggest cheerleaders have been my family and friends. Sometimes I try to explain an idea for a project and I can tell they don’t know what half the words I’m using mean, but they always reassure me that will be great.
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and my high school honors teachers really inspired me to continue on a creative career path. Phyllis Reynold’s Naylor wrote the Alice series, which has a scene for every phase of life I’ve been through. Her books have really helped me stay grounded.
My first clients will always have a special place in my heart. They’re recognition of my talents and constructive criticism kept me motivated and taught me how to handle freelance projects and hone my time management skills.
