Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorena Lorenzo. She and her team share their story with us below:
Born in the beautiful city of Havana, Cuba, Lorena found herself through the love of art. Picking up a paintbrush at a very young age, she fell in love with drawing colorful and bright things.
Lorena studied at Elemental Visual Art Institute and graduated at 19 with a diploma in Fine Arts. Starting her career as the tattoo artist she has become today.
She collaborated and worked at the Main Experimental Graphics Studio in Havana doing Printmaking and Woodcut Artwork and also participated in collective art exhibits, community art events, and art shows with other talented artists in Havana.
After moving to Toronto, Canada in 2008, Lorena continued to keep up with her studies and graduated from OCAD. She also attended TSA (The Toronto School of Art) finishing her studies with another Fine Art Diploma. In 2009, Lorena got involved in the Tattoo Industry and has since worked next to many world-renowned Tattoo Studios and Artists of Canada, the USA, Mexico, Europe, Cuba, and other countries.
In 2016, she opened her own art studio and tattoo shop and has been thriving ever since.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
To start, the industry is tough and it can be hard to introduce yourself as a young female artist. The industry, at the time, was more dominated by males, and of course, the level of talent was huge in Toronto.
It was a challenge to work in a studio with other talented artists and get your name out there. I spent hours and hours learning from others as an apprentice and perfecting my drawings all well trying to promote my name in a city full of talent.
Building a reputation was an obstacle I did not know I would face, but I was lucky to have such great mentors to help guide me and become who I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am known in the city as the coverup queen, working with scars, out-of-date, and unwanted tattoos. I am also known for all my pattern and mandala geometrical work. Especially when I do the tattoos using my freehand technique, not to mention my use of bright colors and combinations.
I am most proud of the work I do on scars, especially when I am working with Mastectomy scars and other cancer survivors. The joy I bring to them, the confidence they get from it. From the beginning of the project to the end, I always feel overwhelmed with the joy that I can help change these individuals’ lives.
What sets me apart from others? Great question. I believe I am different because I care more about the art and the client than anything else. Plus I have a talent others do not when it comes to covering up scars, working with dark skin tones, and dealing with complex designs that many artists will turn away.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is when I tattoo a client and it transforms their life and the way they look at themselves. When they are overwhelmed with happiness and walk out feeling like a new person, that is success to me.
Also, I know I have become successful as strangers in the city know who I am and what I can do for them and other tattoo artists approach me asking for advice or coaching. After all the years in the industry, I continue thriving and becoming a bigger and better artist than before.
